This is like Ford vs Chevy these days, pellet vs (___). I’ve been cooking on pellet grills for almost 10 years, first on a Camp Chef and now a Yoder. The sheer versatility of these can’t be beat first of all. I can smoke jerky at 150 or sear a steak at 650. I get plenty of smoke flavor, you do have to learn how to cook on these machines for the best result. I have been using the 40lb bags of hardwood pellets from Sam’s for some time now, it’s hard to beat the price for 100% hardwood pellets,$15.

Only ever used Traeger brand. Both online from them and 40lb bags from Costco

Rec Tec... No smoke tube needed

I mulled over Traeger vs RecTec for months. Watched tons of review videos and when I had the chance to buy a Traeger for substantially cheaper than the RecTec I was looking at, it sealed the deal for me.

So far I've cooked two things and have had great success. Looking forward to doing my first brisket soon.

We seem to be similar as far as what we are looking for in a cooking device. The versatility of these things along with the ease seems great to me. I am just wondering how big a diference there is from Rectec price range vs traeger price range vs the target/walmart price range.

I bought the recteq 340 and will be in tomorrow to go along with the Blaze 42 I have. I know its small but will use that only to smoke things. I was torn between this and Traeger and decided to go with RT. I like the portability of it as well. I dont think you could ever tell the difference between the two if used properly.

When you buy pork steaks don't buy the packaged one's. Buy a pork butt and have the butcher slice it into 1" steaks.

The ONLY reason I went small is because the wife wanted a built in and bought the blaze for me. We have a small family anyways and if its too small for what I want to cook I will just go to the next size. I told her it was for strictly smoking with occasional steaks. Only time I would need a bigger grill is when the inlaws come in town. I will give them the Blaze before anything else.

Lumberjack is my favorite with CookinPellets next. I have used Bear Mountain, but I have heard they are good. These use 100% hardwood. Do not use Traeger pellets if possible, they are flavored pellets.

Better yet, lean to smoke with actual pieces of burning wood.

I did do that for years, but the ease of smoking with a pellet smoker outweighs having a better smoke taste. The stick smoker had to be constantly attended to and if not you would get a burnt piece of meat.

It is also impossible to haul around a stick burner in my motorhome.

Nah. Was fun smoking a pork shoulder all day and being able to leave the house to go to a party and run errands; and only check the temp of the meat every couple of hours.

My issue is not so much with the smoker as I do think I can do butts ok with the Traeger and will this weekend.

My issue is with calling it a grill. It is not. It is an oven.

I would MUCH rather grill on charcoal.

I should have bought a $150 electric smoker that will do the same or better smoke job than the Traeger with the same convenience of being able to walk away.

I thought the Traeger was something it is not.

I am certain great meals are prepared on Traegers all day long and I glad the people that have them and use them like them. The device is only contributing electric heat just like the oven in your house.

I can do better grilling on charcoal and smoking on wood or charcoal.

I think it will do an adequate job on the butts I am cooking this weekend and I think with the various methods described in this thread I could do an adequate job with chicken. I could do just as well with the cheap electric smoker.

Get a set of grill grates. I grill steaks and burgers all the time using them.

Ok learned more about my Traeger in with another bad experience.

So I put two butts on around 4 yesterday. Set it on smoke and got some some and left it there for about 3 hours (it ran mostly at 160 degrees so it never would have cooked those butts the way I wanted). At 7 I turned it to 225 and had a little more than 3/4 of the box of pellets. Based on what it had burned I thought that would be enough to get through the night. At 6 this morning it out. The butts were cold and the pellets were empty.

I talked to Traeger. It does depend on the pellets for heat. The element only heats the pellets to burn and does not supply the heat for the grill.

So if I use it again I will make darn sure to add more sticks--I mean pellets--every 3 or 4 hours. It will need more pellets in cooler weather.

The butts are done but not pull pork done. I am just going to chop them.

I am snake bit on this grill.

This is a fact. Does it not have a low pellet alarm? And yes, the hearing element is only to get them started, from there it just goes off the combustion of pellets. GMG is the same way.

How big is the pellet hopper? My recteq has a 30lb hopper and I’ve never come close to running out on longer pork butt or brisket smokes
