Two things about Acadiana eating

I grew up in Houma, so we aren’t far away, and it’s hard to find someone who loves rice & grave like I do, but damn, these people love them some starches. The other day I got a plate lunch and the lady asked me if I wanted my chicken & dumplings over rice.
Another thing is Sunday lunch BBQ. Every non chain restaurant, small grocery and gas station serves the same dry assed BBQ lunch and people stand in line like it’s their last meal. Pork steak, Jack Millers, and dry rice
dressing.
ETA I would like to apologize to all of the Prairie pages that I offended by saying that I thought it was strange that people eat chicken and dumplings over rice, or their desire to stand in line to buy a pork steak every Sunday for lunch. Now, you may go back to sprinkling your crawfish—which really is the best method.

I don’t think I’ve ever had it any other way. How do you usually eat it?
Also, sounds like you should quit eating plate lunches cause rice is kind of staple in SW Louisiana. Not sure what you were expecting.

Ive never had chicken and dumplings over rice
It was served in bowl like chicken noodle soup, no rice
The dumplings are the starch, why do you need rice?

HA, my buddy married a girl from Carencro, and he likes to rant about the rice and gravy thing.
He basically says every single dinner meal her parents cook at home, has rice and gravy. That the wife basically all she knows how to cook is rice and gravy.
I always just thought he was being dramatic. I didn't know that was a real thing.

Might be easier for a person who makes good rice and gravy to learn other dishes than it would be for a cook who makes other things to learn how to make good rice and gravy meals. Maybe.

Didn’t say I needed the starch. Just always the way I’ve had it served. Although I agree cutting the rice is a lot less filling and probably better for you.
I’d also assume, from a retail standpoint, the rice is a good, cheap way to fill up a plate without having to use more chicken. I’d think it’s an economic thing. Especially for a restaurant.

I grew up with everything over rice.
Moved to Alabama, the first time I cooked chili and had rice to serve with it I got some looks

My wife from port allen, who claims to be cajun, calls me a weird yankee for eating chili over rice. I've tried to explain to her every damn time, it's not a yankee thing. In south louisiana, damn near every meal has rice and if you really were cajun you'd know that.
Yes, chili on fritos is great, but I prefer rice like I've always had it.

This isn't unique to South Louisiana. In Hawaii they serve their plate lunches with rice and macaroni salad.
There are some good Sunday BBQ plate lunch spots.
