Yes I would give them a shot for sure.

Mona's Cafe next may be the most underrated place on magazine though and it's directly next door. Great food and great prices. No one is ever there.

Baie Rouge is solid but I wouldn't go for a friday night date. It's a Saturday lunch spot. IMO.

WTF?

There is part of your answer.

Mona's is adequate at best. First of all, they have 10? locations all over town. For that cuisine, it is grossly underseasoned. IMO

It's not expensive, but it's priced similarly to same style restaurants.

I've heard some good reviews about Basin but still haven't tried it. Anyone heard anything new?

It's a family owned business. So because they have locations all across town they can't be good?

And what exactly do you get that's grossly underseasoned? Never had a bad meal there.

I can't vouch for the other locations but the one on magazine is great.

Ended up eating a late lunch at baie rouge. The arugula salad with red wine vinaigrette was awesome. "The catch" (grilled fish sandwich) was also good. Had to tear some bread off as the bread to meat combo was not good.

I can see why people complain about the fries. Seasoned nicely but they were soggy. Also after just a few I only had stubs left. A pet peeve of mine when eating fries

Overall, I'd recommend. Iced coffee was delicious too.

Amici???

It looks like this place is opening on Tuesday.

I called Saturday, saw people inside but it was a private party.

I'm excited to give it a shot.

The pictures I saw of the inside look very good, warm and modern. However, this design style seems to be repeating itself. Think, Wayfare, Baie Rouge. Similar looking set up.

I finally got around to Ancora this weekend. Hard keeping up with all these new places.

I have been to Baie Rouge twice now. Had the burger the 1st time which was good. Flavorful pattie cooked to order. Didn't care for the bun or the bacon oddly enough. 2nd time went for brunch and it was fantastic. Had the steak and eggs although everything on the menu looked great. Next trip I'll have the chicken and waffles.

Also have found my way over to Rivista for brunch. Good but a bit pricey. Not a coffee drinker but I would go back for brunch.

Great review, Wise....

What did you think?

I need to go check it out.
I may find my way to Amici before the week is out.

I think Ancora could be the best pizza in the city. The meatball pizza might be the best thing I had all weekend outside of that cucumber drink at RDV.

When I past by yesterday they looked like they are ready for business. The same could be said about McClures too but I'm yet to see people inside. Hopefully this week.

basin is excellent. Much better than surrounding restaurants. It is certainly not a 'standard' seafood place.

VOR vouched for it as well. Said it's a little pricey but still good.

Good to hear but not a particularly high bar.

True. Let me put it this way, it is not even in the same stratosphere as the Khodr own joints polluting the area. Don't let the location dissuade you.

I went to Basin about a month and a half ago. According to what I posted here, I had a dozen oysters, a beer, and stuffed flounder with crabmeat, roasted beets, local greens, with a grapefruit beurre blanc. The oysters were larger and better than I anticipated. The entree was really rich and the flounder was overpowered by the crab, but I suppose that's to be expected because of flounder's delicate flavors. The greens and beets were top notch.

All told it came to a hair over $50 before the tip. Food was good, my server was good -- good is how I would describe the place. Definitely a step-up from the surrounding joints, of that there is no doubt, but I don't think I'd call it great.

Out of curiosity, I walked into Amici yesterday around 5:30. I thought the place looked completely different from what it was as Byblos . . . although on closer inspection it was mostly cosmetic. Structurally, it's the same.

Couldn't find a menu online but I have one that I swiped while there. The 12" pies from $14 to $18 for the house made ones. You can build a pie beginning at $9 plus $2 each for additional ingredients. I'm interested to find out what the hell "coal fired" pizza means

The Italian entree's run from $15 - $28. Pasta runs $9 - $19.

They have the obligatory list of martinis and "specialty drinks". Did not have time to look at the wine list.

I'll give it a shot. I'm also interested in the actual ownership and management structure. Those guys are a moving target when it comes to that. I did meet a suit in there who shook and introduced himself as ___________________ Rizzuto. An Italian partner of the Lebanese?

Phil???

I wonder why they are going with 12" pies? Isn't 14" pretty standard?

It sure seems on the high price side. I still want to try it soon.

VOR, any people in there?

It was pretty empty when I walked by around 10:00 last night but then again...it was 10:00.

Going with the 12", so yeah, they better be pretty tasty at those prices.

It's funny, I thought he may have said Phil, but then I figured I was just thinking of the Yankee's shortstop.

Nope. But they don't open until 5pm, and I ran in about 5:30, looked around and left. I suspect it picks up later.

Order a pizza from Slice last night instead because of this.

Good catch, Wise.

If Amici slings a pie as good as Ancora that will be fine. At this point, TBD!

I am not ok with paying a premium to eat on Magazine St.
