Dear Friends,

Our friend, natelsu, began an important discussion today when he shared delightful photographs of his homemade Reuben. He asked the questions, "Is there a better sandwich?"

The answer is yes. There are many better sandwiches. I am only including the sandwiches I have tried. I do not include poorboys, as the poorboy is an entire cuisine unto itself. One could argue that any of these sandwiches could be dissected into its own category with a top ten parsing to follow. I suppose that is true. I look forward to reading your top ten lists as well. Please share.

10. Pepperoni bread, Sarcone's, Philadelphia

9. Meatball parm roll, Parm, NY

8. Pastrami, Stachowski's Market, D.C.

7. Dungeness crab roll, Pike Place, Seattle

6. Friend chicken sandwich, Popeyes, New Orleans

5. The Dennis, Parisi Bakery, NY

4. Corned beef, Katz's, NY

3. Italian beef, Portillo's, Chicago

2. Italian hero, Faicco's, NY

1. Muffuletta, Central Grocery, New Orleans

Tastefully Yours,
TulaneLSU

No love for our own Steins? Dan is a baw and their sandwiches are really really good.

I would still take a well made Reuben over any of the above

Friend,

Perhaps you could list your top ten Reubens? I rarely get that type of sandwich. I got it once at Parkway Bakery, and enjoyed it.

Stein's is okay to good. Nothing in his shop approaches the top 10 nationally.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

P.S. An enterprising sandwich maker could make waves by starting boudin sandwiches. I think that could be a regional fare that could become big.

So now you are going to talk to me in third person? That’s fine.

And

You are wrong

And you are not the only one who travels too, You won’t cross a bridge, I am not sure how you get on a plane.

Friend,

I don't have ten favorites. I actually got inspiration from the board about a week ago. I think it was either Meridiandog or Cajunate.

I've tried Reubens before but wanted to try to make my own. I've since learned that they are freaking awesome.

Sincerely,
nateslu1

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Reuben

Friend,
Did you grow up like I did, poor in New Orleans, and often the only sandwich my single Mother could prepare her three daughters was a butter and sugar sandwich on Bunny bread? What sandwich did you enjoy as a child?

We ate Jack Miller's or Pig Stand on Evangeline Maid bread with mustard for a snack.

I remember that bread. Is that a regional thing? Lafayette or west of BR?

The bakery is in Lafayette but it's distributed regionally.

Dear Friend,

What the frick is this shite? This list is the biggest floppy piece of shite I’ve ever seen. No disrespect. Central Grocery’s muff is more overrated than your mom’s.

Try a whole fig preserve and ham on toasted raisin bread sandwich. You have to make it your self.

Friend,

Ms. Mae made a lot of homemade sandwiches for us. It was usually Boar's Head smoked turkey, which she purchased at the Arabella Langenstein's. If we ate out for food between bread, it was usually Guy's, which I first remember trying in 1995. I don't remember it being open before that time, but you can't trust a ten year old's memory for what wasn't there.

Sometimes I wish I had been born blessed and not wealthy. I am embarrassed to confess that I was a spoiled rich kid who never got to partake in some of the simpler pleasures of a more modest childhood. I am grateful now for what I had, but I do not in any way see my monied upbringing superior. In many ways it chained me and only in recent years am I breaking free of those chains.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

One thing about this list that I appreciate is that it reflects the undeniable and painful truth that the best sandwiches are made in the NE. Sarcones, Katz’s, Portillo’s (okay Chicago). In Philadelphia alone there are 5 or 6 sub/hero places alone that beat most anything from Atlanta to Dallas.

I haven’t had a Central Grocery Muffelletta in years. I do agree with the ranking. The fist one I had was “a platonic dish”.

That's not even the best chicken sandwich, much less the number 5 sandwich, period.

Friend,

I must say that I get a bit of perverse enjoyment when the OT leaks over to the FDB.

Bravo, stay well
