Friend,

Thank you for your kind words. I think we all need a little more kindness in our lives at this time.

I just woke from the strangest of dreams. It was the current day and somehow I found myself in a long rectangular room with two other people. One was a stranger, an older woman I cannot recognize. The other was President Trump. He was visibly shaken, almost in tears of fear. He had his head down and he constantly was shaking it back and forth.

I felt like I should do something, but I was paralyzed. I just stared at the President and my anxiety worsened.

Then someone opened the door and told the President the cameras were ready. He stood up and started going out the door.

At the last possible moment, I put my hand on the President’s shoulder and said, “Mr. President, May I please anoint you with a prayer right now?”

He looked up with the countenance of a relieved child. He said, “Yes, please.”

I prayed a short prayer for wisdom and courage. He went forward.

In an instant I was transported to a hotel room. It reminded me of a room in which I stayed in Gulf Shores nearly three decades ago. I believe it was a Holiday Inn.

At the far end was Joe Biden and members of his staff. Closer to me was Bernie Sanders and one of his staff members. It looked as though they were preparing for a debate. It was quite loud.

I stood up and said, “Mr. Biden and.” My mind went blank. I couldn’t think of Mr. Sander’s name. “Uh, uh, uh.” I sounded like a stuttering fool. Then Bernie came to mind, but I realized I couldn’t call him Bernie, and just looked at him and said, “And you, sir.”

“President Trump is afraid right now. He’s not afraid of either of you. He’s afraid for his life and the life of our country. This is the time we must all come together and pray.”

The next thing I know I am waking with a warm pillow on my face and my blanket completely removed. I went to the bathroom, and then decided it was a dream worth sharing, so I posted it here. I am now caught up to the present.

Pray, dear friends. Have a blessed day.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

So this is a thing?

I’ve always wondered why my dad likes his burgers with unmelted cheddar cheese. Now I know.

THE thing actually

#4, smoked sauce and onions

the Calhoun location was my Bud’s. I worked at shanahans during and after my extended matriculation at Loyola. Two #4’s, fries and a Barq’s

Uncle knows the 70s and 80s New Orleans business scene better than anyone I know. You name a restaurant or store and he can tell you the address and a random fact about it. It's amazing.

I was always a two #4 kind of guy, but lately I have been getting just one with a sausage sandwich as well. The sausage is really good

I respect any place that stays open 24 hours.

This is definitely a middle of the night spot after a late night at the Treasure Chest and working your way from America's City, Kenner, back to civilization.

If I remember correctly, the Bud's there was one of the first spots to open back up after Katrina. Got me through some dark times when there weren't a lot of options. Haven't tried them since they become Ben's.

Friend,

That is true. For a time, Mother and I ate at that Bud’s (now Ben’s) and do our grocery shopping at the Walgreens on the corner of W Esplanade and Clearview. This was early October of 2005.

I have some menu suggestions for Ben’s Burgers:

5. Add the chili to the sides menu and name it Manuel’s Chili

4. Highlight the peculiar NOLA style method of slicing hit dogs and sausages: Sliced and charred dogs or Choppa Dogs could be the name. I’m sure you can find a better name.

3. Change the poboy to poorboy.

2. Rename funnel cake fries to Beignet Fries.

1. Rename BBQ sauce to flame or fire sauce.

Once we come through this I have every confidence that Ben’s Burgers will thrive like never before. I respect your decision to shut the doors temporarily for the safety of the community and employees. When reopened, I will ensure that my family gives you significant business.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

You are correct. We opened within 2-3 weeks of Katrina. First place open in all of the city for all i know. I worked there during that time it was madness. Dining room was packed we had stand up eaters crowding the empty space for some AC. 30-40 min sometimes an hour wait times for orders. We pumped out 7x a normal days sales in 12 hours. We had to go to Baton Rouge for a weeks worth of supplies every single day. Put us on the map. We’re the same people at Ben’s come see me.

I respect your suggestions but politely refuse all of them.

Fun fact when we first became Ben’s i almost out pulled pork sandwiches on the menu. Didn’t do it because of cook time, kitchen and cooler space: Had to go with the essentials.

I passed by today and saw the big sign. It made me sad. I love your burgers.

Hopefully TulaneLSU saves some pussy out there for the rest of us.

I like most of your message, Ben is a great guy and I hope his business thrives for decades. I am appalled by your disrespect to Dan Stein though. He has done more for this community then you will ever do.

Friend,

Are you really appalled by me saying Ben is cooler than the guy who runs Stein's? If so, your threshold for offense is quite low, as are my lesser friends' attempts to impugn me for the slightest of humors. This is TulaneLSU's Top 10 and comparisons and rankings are everything. When any NOLA chef can write, sing, and produce music videos to the level of Ben's Burgers' owner, then we will have a coolest chef competition. Until that time, Ben is tops.

Rooted in NOLA since 1810,
