Love it down there. The old LuLu's was great. We've been going to Billy's and Jesse's for almost 20 years. Also good to grab a drink at Grand Hotel.

I have told this before. One Friday night, maybe 20 years ago, we were going to Bon Secour and stopped (as always) at LuLu's on Weeks Bay. We went in and took a seat at one of the tables and our waiter walked up. I was shocked to see Jimmy Buffet was waiting tables that night. He was in town and his sister was short handed, so he decided to help out. It was late and business was slack, so he took a seat and had a beer with us, along with a fry or two.

The biggest Duh I can add to my story is he was a really laid back, really nice guy. It was one of many good nights we have had on the Redneck Rivera.

Cool story. When he would randomly show up down there to hang and play a song or two, it would spread like a jubilee. Everyone got on the phone and would tell their buddies.

Nope. Not even close to the best tomatoes in Alabama.

Now they do grow some great sweet corn.

I ate at Jesse’s today

Oysters and their beast burger which was elk, wagyu and boar.

I enjoyed it and the place

Posting negative review of that place is like criticizing the Grand Canyon.

Wow. Looking at your pictures I can’t believe that Greek church is that interesting which is embarrassing because I live a few miles from it. You went to the Fairhope Walmart and did not visit the historical part of downtown Fairhope. Seriously? I’m assuming you’ve already been there since your mother is smitten on this area.

I do disagree with you about the tomatoes. Whatever county grows Stone Mountain tomatoes is the best in Alabama. Now that Baldwin County Silver King Corn is some of the best corn I’ve ever eaten.

You are very observant of the damage done to the pecan orchards. Most of the debris has been picked up but the pecan orchard by my house lost over 30 trees. Hurricane Sally was very destructive here in Baldwin County mainly because the storm felt like it stalled right on top everyone and would not push north. Can’t say that I would want to be stuck in the eye wall of a hurricane for 12 hours again.

I always order the steaks at Jesse’s and can’t comment on their other offerings.

Very interesting post.

I’ll toss you an upvote since you were wise enough to dine at Jessie’s. Never had a bad meal there. The tenderloin risotto is a damn fine lunch.

Friend, I truly enjoyed your recounting of this journey. It has been many years since I’ve been to Bon Secour, despite living just a short drive away, but I recall a decent seafood restaurant called the Tin Top. Perhaps one day you can eat there and provide us a review.

Friends,

Meridian Dog, Mother and I hope to make another visit to the church in Malbis and enjoy its interior splendor as much as its exterior. The pecan orchard photographed was on 98, shortly after the eastward turn from the north-south route, but I do not know if the estate is being sold or not. We wanted to thank you again for your thorough description of this route in your original post, Meridian Dog's path from Malbis to Bon Secour. Without it, we would never have known this little journey existed. We are indebted to you.

lsumailman61, what a kind offer! Thank you for your invitation of hospitality and oysters. I cannot think of a more pleasant activity than sharing a dozen oysters with you! Perhaps next time. My qualm with the pricing of the oysters was directed at the service. For $30 per dozen, one would expect a professional shucker, not a noisome mechanical device that amplifies metal rapidly grating against solidified mineral. I suppose if a restaurant really wants put out to pasture the cultural institution of professional oyster shuckers and exchange that deep heritage with such a device, it should be operated far away from the dining area in a sound proofed area. And the oysters need then to be inspected to ensure that no grit is on them. Your delicious oysters deserve a better handling.

GreenRockTiger, I am finding that Baldwin County is full of surprises, and good ones. In particular, I have found TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Fairhope, AL, even if I do not like the Grand Hotel nearby.

My favorite town of the area is actually Elberta, of which you may enjoy TulaneLSU's Top 10 things enjoyed in Elberta and Foley, AL. Some would say amusement rides are a bit immature, but I was thrilled, between my episodes of emesis, to attempt every ride at OWA and formulate TulaneLSU's Top 10 rides of OWA.

rooster, I can assure you that the famed Cassebaum family of silver corn fame also grows some of the best tomatoes I have ever eaten. They were heirlooms, so perhaps your insult was related to these tomatoes being of that variety. Those tomatoes were so great they inspired TulaneLSU's thoughts on the fresh tomato" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer">TulaneLSU's thoughts on the fresh tomato.

South Alabama Fan, we may try your suggestion next time. Thank you.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Buddy I don’t care if I misspelled Stone Mountain or Sand Mountain tomatoes or whatever the hell they are called all I know is Allegri Farm Market on the corner of Hwy 181 and County Road 64 sells them and they are outstanding. If you want to have a meltdown with all caps and multiple exclamation points over a tomato piss off and take that BS to The Rant.

Friend,

There is no reason to share hostility here; we are all friends. If you haven’t tried the tomatoes from Cassebaum Farms in Lillian, this June be sure you do. They will compete with the best tomatoes you have ever tried. The heirlooms in particular are amazing!

Not hostile Friend
Just not into people that spew ignorance on to others!
I have lived in Baldwin county well over 50 years, trucked produce all over south, owned fruit stands, etc.
Lets just say what i said before some people are just clueless!
I was brought up with the wisdom of if your not 100% sure of something do not open your mouth!!
People need to abide by that nowadays!!
