Total Wines Picks

Any Total Wines experts in here? My cellar is fairly bare and I wanted to stock up ahead of holiday gatherings. Looking for Reds. I typically like cabs and fuller bodied Pinots. Open to other options as well… French and Italian imports, etc. Maybe a couple of value pics in the sub $30 range and a couple of special occasion wines in the $50-$100 range.
One last request… I’ve tried like hell to get my wife into wine. Anytime the alcohol gets above 10% or if it has any tannin character, she’s typically out. If there is a low alchohol, slightly fizzy fruit/berry type wine out there that’s better quality than Stella Rosa, let me know what you got.
TIA

I think Jordan makes a great Cabernet in this price point.

If you like imports, stick with them.
As soon as California is on the label, the wine will not hold up to the same quality as French or Italian wines in those price categories

I tend to lean towards the French wines. I am a fan of the fruit forward Napa and Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon though. It is possible to like both.

Clos Apalta Le Petit Clos - $45ish - Chilean Bourdeaux blend and easily one of the best QPRs in the store.
Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz - 60ish - All Mollydooker wines are wonderful, this one is again a wonderful wine for the price, and it packs an absolute punch. Big flavor.
Chateau Musar - 80-100+ depending on year - Lebanese Bourdeaux blend, long considered one of the best wines in the world in that price range. A very famous wine that absolutely delivers above price point.
Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc - 23$ - New Zealand SB that is on many 2023 top 10 lists, very refined for a NZSB and the price is so low.
Cristom Mt Jefferson Oregon Pinot Noir - 33$ - a nice bottle for the price
Antinori Chianti Classico
Ridge Geyeserville Zinfandel
Michael David Petit Petit
Don Melchor (140+)

If you can find a piquette at your local wine store (probably not TW), that would be up her alley. Basically almost like a seltzer version of wine. Very easy drinking and low alcohol wines

They are kind of a thing right now.
Are white wines ok because that would much better fill that.
Try a Txakolina! Basque white wine with a very very slight fizz. Very dry and refreshing. You can get several at TW and there’s usually 1 at better grocery stores.

What the hell? Is this HGTV?
Can we not just call it price?

You need to discover some of the many boutique wineries. They make wine like many European village wineries.

Strongly disagree. While there are tons of garbage wines coming out of California every year, the flip side is also true, and many European vineyards are eating on their name and are no longer worth the price point (frick you, Willie). And there are many, many truly great wines coming out of California. Either learn your varietals and regions, or find someone you trust to help you navigate to crush of information you'll be hit with.

I would not call myself a Total Wines expert because I do most of my shopping at Martin Wine Cellar, but here is my Total Wines advice -
Sign up for the Total Wines app. They send me e-mails all the time advertising discounts. Today they sent me a 20% off coupon if you buy 9 or more of their Winery Direct labeled wines, and often it is for just 6 or more. There are plenty good Winery Direct wines to choose from in all price ranges.
In the Metairie store, when you walk in the door and head to the right-side wall, there is a big display near the wall with their highly recommended and highly rated wines. That is where I go to look first.

Some good recs here but just wanted to add the staff at total wine is typically very helpful, just go and tell them what you posted and they’ll point you in the right direction as well

The "Expert Scores" on Total Wine cannot be trusted, but...
If you filter in their app by Expert Score on what you're looking for, look at the prices, then cross reference on Delectable, Cellar Tracker, or Vivino (last), you can find some truly good Quality/Price ratio wines

I’m not saying there aren’t exceptional wines coming out of Cali every year, there are. The problem is the price point. Specifically when it says a region in Cali, the price is over the quality

We really enjoy the Amici cab. It’s right around $50 and gets great reviews from our guests
