Went there for lunch a while ago on a Saturday, not impressed. Ordered a whole 'shrimp poboy' which to me means fried shrimp. The shrimp were grilled or boiled or something but not fried, not deveined, and it was the smallest poboy I've ever been served, there must have been 3 or so shrimp on each half.
It's hyped up.

I don't like small, baby shrimp (not deveined) for my poboy.

IMO medium shrimp are best for poboys. big ones are not good for a poboy imo. and really? who cares about deveined? Do you devein boiled shrimp?

I have to agree with you boss...everytime I went the shrimp (fried or grilled) were so plentiful I could not keep them in the bread...I am also very happy with the grilled seafood additions...sometimes I just don't want fried.

As to the deveined subject...unless they are very large large or jumbo....don't bother.

Me too. So many shrimp the bread can't hold them.

3 shrimp per side the other poster says? No way. We ain't talking about the same place obviously.

I never had this problem either. I had at least 5-10 shrimp fall off of each 6in side that wouldn't fit on the poboy.

Or BBQ shrimp?

Nay and Nay

Fried shrimp that aren't deveined doesn't bother me in the least. The only time I really bother to devein shrimp are with scampi, grilling them, wrapping them, or stuffing them.

Better not since you use whole, head on, unpeeled shrimp when you make barbeque shrimp.

You're right tavolatim. And for the record... I don't pull the poop string out my crawfish either.

There's no need to devein shrimp that size. The bread, dressings, batter, and shrimp itself cover up any sort of "taste" that shouldn't be there. It's mostly a mind trick more than anything, unless we're talking about the larger size. If I do recall, the platter shrimp are Deveined and Butterflied.

Maybe it was an off day, but it was the skimpiest poboy I've ever been served. I've had off the hook a few times, and found their's much better.

I realize it's an unpopular opinion, as I see their parking lot packed frequently. I gave them a shot, but I won't be going back. No biggie, my shrimp poboy is the best around anyway.

I won't argue between Tommy's and Off the Hook...both are a-one....Tommy's has a little more sit down room...but they both know what they are doing when it comes to seafood.

I went today for lunch. Great fried shrimp poboy with LOTS of shrimp. In fact there were more shrimp than any other shrimp poboy I've ever had.

What was even more awesome was the oyster poboy!!!! Very large oysters overstuffed into real NO style french bread.

On a side note, why does almost every BR poboy place cut the french bread partially through so it hinges (like a hot dog bun)? This bothers me. I want it cut/split completely. The top should be separate from the bottom.

I'm sure it can be done on request. The reason for the par-split is to hold the poboy together and for presentation. I'd rather see a pile of shrimp when that poboy hits my table not the the top end of a piece of bread.
