My philosophy on tomatoes in gumbo depends on the type of gumbo. A blonde roux chicken and sausage gumbo? Tomatoes are fine.
Dark seafood gumbo? No tomatoes.

always add tomatoes…three or four whole from the can squeezed in, no can juice. It doesn’t make the gumbo “red” it just adds another flavor profile as they melt into the liquid if it tastes good and I assume it did why are you whining?
You’re not making gumbo.

Not that uncommon in New Orleans. Guess it’s the creole influence. To each their own. At least we don’t put potato salad in it.

authentic chili is tomato free also. otherwise it would be spaghetti sauce

I have more respect for someone who does potato salad with a dark roux than someone who makes tomato gumbo inspired stew.

Everyone here acts like gumbo was invented in the 80s. Look at an early 1900’s Louisiana cookbook and you’ll see that baws were making gumbos out of tons of shite back then including tomatoes.
But in 2024 everyone thinks they make da best gumbo when you all copying the same Paul Prudhomme method and your “secret ingredient” is which sausage you buy.

If you take a gumbo and add tomatoes to it, it can be delicious
But it is not a gumbo any longer

WTF does it matter? Somebody worried about damn tomatoes in a pot of gumbo will put a couple big scopes of potato salad with enough Blue Plate Mayonnaise to kill a horse, in his perfect bowl oh gumbo.

Potato salad in gumbo is actually a traditional thing, or at least old school, according to a good article I read recently. On the side or a big clump in the middle.
Spoon some and dunk in the gumbo and balances the heat.
So damn good.
