It does sort of matter IMO. If its the bartender or another server putting all this together its different than if someone only responsible for take out orders is doing it.

Thats kind of what I meant. You cant lump all take out situations/restaurants in together. When I get takeout from some smaller places i frequent, I know its a bartender or server doing everything. Damn right Im leaving a decent tip.

Especially if it's a place you order from regularly.

I would tip $20 but at least $10 should be fine, it's take out, they aren't serving you.

Same here. I would probably tip between $10-20 depending on efficiency and friendliness of hostess/bartender. I might not even tip at all if there's a bad attitude.

20+ boxes of food checked, labeled, and bagged is not being served?

There is a take out fairy that magically does it all.

Lol. I deleted my last line saying I guess the food just magically appears ready for you.

I usually tip $1 per meal ordered- with my family of 4, it's $3 (kids will mostly split a meal, or it's something simple like Mac & Cheese)

Delivery drivers don't do anything but bring the food to you- why should they get tipped?

Margins are less on take out orders as well. Unless they upcharge for it. I would tip a minimum of 15% on that order.

Because they are bringing your lazy arse your food.

It really depends on the restaurant.

Some kitchens box and expo the whole order and the hostess just comes and collects, takes payment, and hands over the bags and the hostess keeps the whole tip. Kind of hard justifying handing over $20 for that person but it's hard to know who does what.

You walk in some places where the take out orders are handled by the bartenders and you can see them busting their arse to get it bagged and paid for.

He should have paid with cash, that way the little SJW takeout girl couldn't say anything after he left and tipped them $3.

One of the reasons brought up for tipping is that the server/hostess/whoever boxes an order, makes sure it's correct, labels, etc, but unless you're checking your order before you leave you're tipping on the presumption of proper service. It's putting a value on a service that you're not even sure was done correctly. But we've probably all had a takeout order screwed up in some manner not known until home.

That said, I don't check my order before I leave (I'm lazy) but I do give the benefit of the doubt to the server/hostess and I tip anyway. I'm comfortable with 10% up to $200 and a flat $20 over $200.

I would tip a decent amount

From my experience when I worked at a restaurant in college, the people who did the to-go orders had to make sure everything was correct before handing off to the customer.

So if they are going through dozens of boxes to make sure all the food items are right, as well with all the proper sides and condiments, they should be rewarded for getting it right. Especially if its busy and they have a lot of to-go orders to process.

I remember I worked on Halloween one year and around 9:00-10:00 when trick-or-treating was over we got a shitload of to-go order phone calls. It was ridiculous. So that was a lot of to-go boxes for our one to-go person(they sent the other home because it was dead) to process. I felt bad for her.

I am sure you are being sarcastic, but to people who would agree with this statement, its a lot more complex than that

I did pizza delivery in high school, and its one thing to get a pizza from the restaurant, drive it to the customer's house, and drive back to the restaurant. Yes, that is easy.

But it gets complex when there are multiple orders and you have to figure out how to take 5 different orders to people in one single run. Figuring out what route to take, what order to do it in, as well as making sure you have everything(Occassionaly I would forget a 2 liter or salad and have to go all the way back to the restaurant) and doing it all in a timely fashion. Then going back to the restaurant and seeing 6 orders up and ready to go and having to do it all over again.

Where do you draw the line? Are we going to start tipping the Chefs/cooks? They actually cooked your food. The guy that drives to your house to deliver your pizza deserves a tip. The person that makes sure your glasses are full, drinks are served in a timely manner, explains that nights featured menu, boxes leftover food, and exchanges your money/credit card at the end of the night deserves a tip. Youre telling me the person that puts boxes of food into a paper bag deserves a tip just like the other two?

The line is drawn to me.

I dont tip the chefs or the cooks because they are paid accordingly by the owner. The chefs arent making $3.50/hr.

Well see above for 1 of the other 2. And no I dont think the server in the restaurant that would have served that $250 meal to my table deserves the same 8% tip I gave the to-go person. I would give them more.

Correct me if i am wrong, but you would tip $0 on a $250 to-go order?

Absolutely. There's a great chance that the manager/someone other than a server actually packed said meal that you are tipping for. What's the difference between that person (who is paid more than the chefs/cooks) and the cooks?

When I dine in somewhere, I typically tip very well if the service is good. If it's shitty, I tip average 15%. I dont understand why you would tip someone for putting food into a bag.

Also, do you tip the cashier at the grocery store? They are doing the exact same thing in bagging your groceries and they are getting paid minimum wage.
