Inspired from a conversation in a thread on the Travel Board.

What are your thoughts on Food Halls? I think it’s a really cool concept and a way to try a lot of different things from different places in a casual setting.

Is this like a mall food court?

Think of it as an elevated mall food court, minus the stores.

It's essentially a large space where many local restaurants have a spot and serve a limited menu, and you can order as many items from as many spots as you'd like. And there are bars as well.

Here's a picture of the one near where I live that I pulled from the internet, for reference:

Pretty much. But the food is a little better but overpriced for what you get.

It's no more expensive than what you'd pay for the exact same dish in the restaurant.

Looks like just about every other damn food court Ive been in in cities all over the world. I think there must be 1 design that is allowed.

I never said it was a special food hall, just trying to give reference for those who don't know what I'm talking about. You sure seem salty about food halls, bud.

Actually, pretty much. Same basic concept with a common seating area but multiple different vendors shouldering the costs of the dining room. The difference is that they're not paying exorbitant rent prices for mall space, so the product is usually much better than a mall food court.

Personally, I'd rather eat at a restaurant, but if you're in the mood to browse a bunch of different places (some of which would never be able to swing a restaurant of their own), it can be interesting.

It is. We had heard this was the case so we did a test one trip by eating at a food court and then at the restaurant. Did this for 2 random places. Besides the food and atmosphere being better at the restaurant, you were served a larger portion for a cheaper price. This was in Lisbon. They are convenient if you are in a group that wants different food.

There's a restaurant that serves a well-known burger. Their spot at the Food Hall simply does the burger, at the same price as the restaurant. Am I getting less of a burger?

There's also a donut place, a sushi burrito spot, etc. I just don't see how they're serving smaller portions.

For the record, I do get your point and I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, I just think you're making a blanket statement that isn't wholly applicable.

Well, a burger is a burger no matter where you get it.

They’re alright. They’re pretty cool for lunch when traveling solo, but I never go to White Star here in town.

I went to the relatively new Time Out food hall in the West Loop after work yesterday... but that particular one has stalls by a lot of the city's popular restaurants... we both ordered from the stall run by Fat Rice (Portuguese).. it was excellent but expensive.. very convenient after work..

It's also got 6 different bars...

They’re a good way for newcomers to test their concept without great risk and fine tune their main items that they may want to base a restaurant on.

Good for groups. We went to one with a big work group. Some were picky eaters, and others more adventurous. Everyone found something they liked, and we could eat together.

They’re decent for work lunches for a group where no one wants to decide where to go

At the end of the day you’re eating in a food court. I’ll try these places once but I never go back.
