There seems to be a 5 Day approach to this Puzzle: Day 1 - Rock Hard; Day 2 - changing Color, slightly; Day 3 - ripening, but still unpalatable; Day 4 - Buttery Goodness; Day 5 - Toss.
I can guess correctly about 75% of the Time, but I do waste a lot of them when the Puzzle does not fall into place.
Do you have a better Success Rate?

Put the hard ones in a paper grocery bag and seal them up. They'll be ready the next day. Once soft, refigeration will give you a little more time without waste.

They will go from Firm, to Ripe, in one Day, with the Paper Bag Method?

Otis is right. Avocados are easy to predict if you're doing it right.

If you remove the stem button thing on the avo, you can tell by the color if it's ready or not. Bright green, too soon. Brown, too far gone.
I use the fridge method after they are ready so I can make them last.
I have actually heard you can pop them in the microwave for 10 seconds and it activates the pit to start ripening. Not sure on time /success of this method.

I've never had a rock hard avo ripen overnight in a brown bag. Takes longer unless the process has begun to some extent.
I put in a very ripe banana or an apple and a rock hard avo will be ready in about 2 days. If it's started to ripen at all and the banana is very ripe, it will be ready the next day, usually.
I can keep a ripe unpeeled avo in the fridge for days.

I think You, and Embo, have the correct Answers.
I am not a Novice, with Avos, but cannot Guarantee Ripeness, every time.

Same here.

Squeeze them at the top and bottom to judge firmness like you're holding an egg,
you won't bruise it as much as if you squeeze it around the "waist".

good info in this thread. we go through a lot of avocado, and have wasted more than a couple cutting to early.
little Vedder, 20 months old, loves avocado. one of his favorite meals. always keep a few in the frig for him.

Yes, they, along with Bananas, are truly Food Wonders.

Little Stogie is 15 months old and avocados/guacamole is one of his favorite foods. He eats it 4 times a week at least.
