Sushi restaurants in the United States

I honestly think that with the exception of some really high end places and some of the really poor ones there really isn't that much difference.
The vast majority of sushi restaurants fit in the middle and among those there isn't much deviation in quality. It's just generic run of the mill stuff and either you like that or you don't.

I agree, and my primary complaint is the rice. Sushi restaurants here just don't seem to care about their rice.
Or their tomago, but that's another issue entirely

I’d like to see where Baton Rouge ranks per capita with amount of sushi restaurants per 1,000 residents. The concentration of sushi restaurants in and around Baton Rouge is off the charts high.

I completely agree.
There’s a place here that is high end sushi (~$300-400/person) that id love to pull the trigger on but likely never will.
Other than that, they’re all pretty much the same.

The nigiri is generally turrible. Why open a sushi joint if you can't make proper rice?

I love tomago...but it's generally a meh item around here.
Lots of places have what seems like 'watery fish. I'm sure it's some chemical, but it masks/replaces the subtle flavor of the fish. If my first hamachi nigiri has it I just chop stick a bunch of wasabi on everything.

I hate the places that feel the need to deep fry everything on the menu.
I had one owner tell me that deep frying the majority of their stuff is due to being in the South and needing to do it to keep his restaurant afloat.
That's fricking sad and disgusting at the same time.
If I'm going out to eat sushi I want it raw, not covered in crunchy bullshite.

Pretty much.
There’s a place here that I absolutely love though. Called sushi sake in Richardson. The fish menu is in chalk because it changes often based on what they have. It’s a true sushi bar where you order directly from the chef. So many places have a waiter come to the bar and that’s not what it’s supposed to be.

Yeah
I think most big enough places even have a few of the medium price point places that stand out above the others in the same range.
There are a couple on the northshore that are pretty solid and don't have obscene prices.
I honestly don't think I'll ever go to one of the really upscale ones. I'm allergic to too many types of fish to get any enjoyment or value out of it.
I also have a strong suspicion that it's all complete bullshite.

Clearly you've never been to a good sushi restaurant such as Nobu, Uchi or Zuma.

The fact that you have to bring up places that are nationally known sort of proves the point. These aren't your average places you find in every city.
ETA or you don't know what vast majority means

My top three in New Orleans are
Sushi Brothers
Uchi Sushi
Mikimoto (because they deliver fast)

What’s the name of this restaurant?

O’Ya.
For the record I could be off on price. I’m honestly just basing it off what others who have been there have told me.
I love sushi and all, but I don’t see myself ever paying that kind of tab for it.

I'm genuinely curious about my downvotes. Is it because you think the rice in most sushi restaurants is good? Or that the rice isn't important?
Or that you think the tomago here is good?

You could easily drive yourself insane trying to discern the logic of downvotes on this board.
