I want to buy my BIL a BGE for Christmas. I know he wants an XL (he's been talking about it for years) so he can make large pizzas, but he will also grill and smoke with it.

This thing will eventually go into a table or countertop, when they redo their deck and patio area. As best as I can tell, in addition to the egg itself, I'll need to get a nest, cover, baking stone and I guess a plate setter. Any other suggestions? Opinions on the cast iron grate upgrade? The handler? (A large is heavy. I'd imagine the XL weighs a ton.)

Thanks in advance for the help!

He's a great guy, always doing things for other people, especially my sister. He deserves his fantasy cooker.

If it's going into a table or something similar soon, then I would skip the nest. I have mine straight on the concrete patio. That wouldn't be ideal for a large...it's not as sturdy of a base.

Plate setter is a must have.
Ash tool is very handy.

Cast iron grate is nice. Spacing of the stock grate allows foods like asparagus to fall through. Cast iron is tighter plus a better sear on meats. Not a must have...just nice.

Thanks for the tips. He needs a nest for now, so he can roll it in and out of the garage. That's why I was wondering about the handler. (The deck/patio project may not happen for a year or two.)

If you're getting the baking stone and he's into pizzas, don't forget a pizza peel - it's a bitch trying to transfer the pizza from a prep board to the stone without it.

Plate setter is the thing I use the most - you may want to throw in a drip pan, which is pretty cheap.

I would recommend a grid riser - the way it is built, the grid will sit about 4-5 inches below the opening, which is too close to the fire for a lot of foods - the riser is a piece of metal that will raise it up to the opening level.

And I also vote for the cast iron - it does a better job than the stock grate. I also have a cast iron 'half-moon' which is ideal for sautéing veggies on - highly recommended.

I hadn't thought of the pizza peel, sounds like a must have.
All great suggestions, thanks!

The Maverick is a two piece digital thermometer. One end stays on your grill with the meat and Grill probe and the other end comes with you in the house to keep a close eye on temps.

Sweet table. I want to build one too. I already have a piece of granite (from a sink cutout) that I want to incorporate into an egg table as a prep area.

Damn that's exactly what I want for mine. Where would be the best place to get that cut and what you think it'd cost?

Is there a thermometer that has a little fan that blows through the bottom vent to stoke the fire? I seem to remember seeing that. (or maybe I was inventing things in my head again)
