Signing the tip/receipt as the waiter watches directly over shoulder

I recently ate at a restaurant where instead of a paper credit card receipt hitting the table for me to sign, the waiter brought a portable device with a screen and asked me to sign, with the tipping included in the process. It was not only an awkward time for that to happen during the conversation with my guest, but the waiter stood over my right shoulder, instructing me as to how to use the device, and watching what I was tipping. I wasn't so much insulted as just feeling generally uncomfortable with the concept of "you need to sign right now and I'm going to stand over you as you tip". Is this a new trend? It was my first experience with it and didn't like it at all.

They’ve been doing this for years in Europe and Canada. Aside from the hovering over me thing, I think it’s a great thing for restaurants to do.

Well they can't just drop it off and leave they have to return it so someone else can use.

I imagine there have been growing pains with the middle age dining crowd converting to this new method. We have all seen the struggles with the "Self-Checkout" options in stores. People can't read, follow prompts, and complete transaction.

I wish restaurants included 15-20% in the menu and paid them an hourly rate like $10 or so. Tipping is outdated

I lose all my math skills when someone is watching me tip. My mind just goes blank.

Just cover it with your non-signing hand like you're back in grade school taking a test & periodically look up at the waiter... just to f*k with them!

I like messing with them. I either write or select a big 0 for tip tehn hand them a good cash tip they go from shock to anger to smiles

good cash tip

Servers prefer cash tips. My old M.O. was to write 'No Tip For You' on the tip line and then leave cash. As a former server, I thought I was doing them a favor so they didn't have to claim the gratuity as income. Fun times!

He should have not hovered over you but this is a better way to process CC's and lowers the CC theft issue in the industry.

So you'd like to pay 15-20% more before having any idea how the service is?

Will if the service industry was salary based, your performance would be graded just like every other profession. the better you are the more you get paid.

Had this happen at B and B butcher in Houston last week for the first time. Was definitely weird.

To the point about it being normal in Europe, isn’t tipping not a thing over there? So it would make it a completely different issue:

Love it when they bring Square or Euro style machines to the table, but it is uncomfortable if they hover while you complete it.

Give a brother some space while he’s trying to do math.

Yeah as if following the kooks in Europe and Canada is a good idea. Sorry this is america.

A server would lose a few percent by trying this tactic on me. There is too much participation entitlement among servers nowadays.

Yeah, it is mainly to complete a card transactions. They'll ask you how you are paying and if it's card, they bring the 'doofer' as my dad likes to call it.

The difference in Europe is that the server takes your card, inserts it into the machine, inputs the total, gives it back for you to enter your PIN, and then completes the transaction or if your card does not have a PIN, they will print a receipt for you to sign. If you want to add gratuity, you have to let the server know before they enter the total as there is not a prompt for the tip. If you forget then usually you just leave a couple Euros or whatever on the table.

Of course tipping is nothing like in the states (15-20%) it's more like 5-10%. And they'll be glad to have it too. Most servers are making between 10-15 Euros/hr so the 2-6 extra Pounds, dollars, or euros they get are well received. They don't get pissy about it as they weren't expecting it.
