guy at work mentioned that this past weekend he was down at his camp on GI and that they had boiled shrimp, and then made shrimp spiders with the heads. I'd never heard of them before and only one other person at work had heard of them. is this a new thing or just not that popular of a preparation?

What I gather is that you cut the horn and eyes off the head then batter and fry with the legs still attached, hence the "spiders" name.

Is it really this simple? and does anyone have any recipes or tips?

apologize for all the questions.

Just tear the legs off..
They stay together with the "ribcage".

Flour, Salt, pepper..
Fry till crispy..

Good little snacks

First time I had them was close to 40 years ago when a friend of mine had caught a bunch of 11-15 shrimp. We cleaned them by pulling off the head shell then dipped them in a dredge and seasoned corn meal to fry. Loved them and will eat them to this day when I get me fresh large shrimp.

I find the larger shrimp work better and don't wind up all cornmeal like the littler ones do.

These are a shrimp version of soft shell crab. I love them and very little waste after popping the heads off.
