Right, the restaurant is open in both situations.

By that statement, then 9:05 does equal 9:45

I doubt the not cleaning the dining area part.

I've worked in fine dining. We didn't whip out the vacuum but we cleaned everything possible.

And customers can be huge douches. 10 pm closing and they show up at 9:50 and stay till 1 or 2. This has nothing to do with being happy to have customers. It took all I had to not tie the people to their chairs and torch the building. This happened often.

They didn't take anything off the other tables besides things to be bussed.

It seems that most people here are in agreement that it is NOT acceptable for people to come in after closing time. It seems though that most of the general public does not agree.

Most of the general public? Seriously?

Where did you work?

If you really think working in a kitchen that pumps 300 meals a night is not stressful compared to selling retail, then that must've been one terrible restaurant.

calendar's on highland back in the 90s .. and yes, we pumped shite out .. different era too .. people actually appreciated their jobs ..

If I get in just before closing (which happens often when I work the swing shift that ends at 9). I apologize and leave a 30-40 % tip

WTF are you talking about? I knew half the people that worked there in the mid 90's...when that Calendar's was practically the place to go. I promise, they were like any other restaurant crowd.

different era of workers almost 20 years ago, just like it was a different era of workers 20 years prior to that .. work ethics have gotten watered down over the years in all fields ... you didn't have 1/10th the whiny arse, self entitled wait staff people you have today ..

I hate this attitude where the customers are the assholes for trying to do business during posted business hours. Don't post that you're open until 10 if you're only really open until 9:30 or whatever the appropriate time is. Powerman and Rag talked about a late night menu and that is probably the best way to handle it, I'd have no problems if I walked into a place close to closing and they told me only certain types of items were available. As for the OP, if it's after hours you really shouldn't expect anything.

GTFO. If a place closes at 10 I should get there no later than 8:30?

If a place closes at 10, I won't get there after lunch to be sure and not offend the delicate geniuses.

That's different than an airport smoothie king shutting down 5 minutes early.

I don't think ANYONE has said that they won't sit a table just BEFORE close. It's just if you've worked in that industry, that last table USUALLY isn't one you're excited about.

Not to say they are all bad.. I've had late tables come in and and apologize, eat something quick and easy and left a great tip on the way out the door.

And I've had late tables try to send back a steak 30 minutes after we closed and the kitchen was breaking everything down since all the tables (even the late ones) had ordered. I've had them say they were finished, leave the check sitting on the table until over an hour after we've closed, then ask for dessert. Just because you can still be seated at 10:58 on a Friday or Saturday night, doesn't mean its cool to stay there until 12:45 leaving $5 on a $75 check.

I've gone in at 9:45 before. Asked if it was ok, offered to eat what was available, don't send shite back, leave a good tip and thank them for their hospitality.

Not all dicks come in at 5 till closing. Circumstances may dictate peoples time. Problem is the staff may be pissed at the dick head that came in at 7 and take it out on me.

Dickheads and douche bags can be earlybirds too.

My favorite post in this thread was the guy who said after working in the industry, he just hates people. I generally hate people as well.

No, but I have worked in a mall when I was 16. I see what time the shops clised and workers left, and aside from some of the larger chains, most did not stay very late.

Well, I can assure you that just about every big brand clothing store these days has workers stay an average of an hour after the doors are closed. They also are never scheduled that late. Yet they don't bitch near as much as SIN people, and don't get tips or commission (most companies have done away with that).

If your hours say you close at 10, and I show up before then, tough shite. Change the hours to 8:30 if you don't like it.... but hen I'd have to be there before 7
