Friends,

It does me no good pleasure to inform you that our beloved Sam's Club is systematically stealing from us. As a multi-decade member of this exclusive club, at first I did not want to believe it. I did everything I could to justify why Sam's was still the best grocery from which to buy seafood. But what I have uncovered in the last six weeks is shocking to say the least.

It is well documented how Sam's includes water and packaging weight on snow and king crabs when pricing the items, even though package nutritional information does not. A five pound package of snow crab that is supposed to produce 48 ounces of snow crab last month only produced 22.19 ounces.

A 1.6 pound package of king crab I purchased at $48 contained only 9 ounces of king crab legs after removing the packaging as well.

These systematic thefts were disappointing to say the least, but I tried to give Sam's the benefit of the doubt. "Is it Sam's fault that the fishermen froze the wet legs on ship which added to their weights?" I was falling into a sort of Stockholm syndrome for shoppers.

The litmus test for whether this is a systemic problem would be for me the Sam's smoked salmon, an old reliable that most of us have had either directly from Sam's or in a restaurant that resells Sam's precooked food after marking it up 400%. No excuse of "water weight" will cut it here. The scale of justice would determine my verdict for or against Sam's. The results were heart breaking.

Advertised weight: one pound

Actual weight: 14.8 ounces

The skim:
Smoked salmon: 7.5%
Snow crab: 216%
King crab: 284%

Imagine if any other industry had that sort of "margin of error." But with Sam's Club seafood, the error always in my research has fallen in the favor of Sam's. I challenge each of you to weigh your food and determine if our grocers are stealing from us. Forget Dateline, this is going to the FBI.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Probably need to get your scale calibrated first and then document your findings.

Friend,

Would I contact the Louisiana Division of Weights and Measures to come to my house and officially certify my scale? My scale comes from Walmart and I have tested more than 10 prepackaged and weighed items, such as lentils, almonds, ketchup, and each of these items gives me a slightly higher weight than the item's listed weight. If anything, my scale appears to slightly overweigh items, which would indicate an even greater degree of fraud from Sam's Club seafood than first thought.

Frozen product contain frozen water. When the water melts (then drains or evaporates), the product will weigh less. Moral of the story, pay the money and buy fresh

Does the seafood specifically state the weight is for contents or package? I would think it doesn't go into those details.

Now water weight, i'm not sure why you wouldn't think that wouldn't be in there. Every food source contains water unless you dehydrate it. Not sure you want an MRE ready for rehydration.

Packaging weight, that's some pretty heavy packaging. Maybe weigh the food at Sam's on the scale to make sure it's accurate?

Friend,

For the salmon, it says one pound. On the nutritional information on the label's back, it says it contains 8 servings of 2 ounces each.

For the snow crab it read 5 lbs of snow crab clusters. On the nutritional information on the label's back, it read that it would yield 48 ounces of meat.

For the king crab, its listed weight, which came in a clear packaged bag was 1.6 pounds. The majority of the weight of the package came from the white plastic soaking pad, which weighed more than the snow crab itself. I do not remember if it had a nutritional info label on its back, but regardless, one would expect such a package to have more crab (with shell) than packaging when it is priced at $30+ per pound.

Do a comparable test at Costco so we know where the better value lies.

Friend,

I feel you are looking into my post in a negative light. I shop at Sam's as well and would love nothing more than to bring these atrocities to light. I simply want you to be taken seriously. Some simple test weights like these from amazon would give your test a lot more credibility.

Clearly your're looking over the nutritional value of the shell itself.

The snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) shells have potential important economical and industrial applications due to their chemical composition. They have a high content of protein (34.2% dw) and essential amino acids; they also have fat (17.1% dw), with a high proportion of ?3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. About 28.5% dw corresponds to ash (calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium are the major minerals). The mean concentrations of vitamin E, astaxantin, and ß-carotene were 23.3, 9.49, and 0.2 mg/100 g dw, respectively. Results presented in this study indicate that snow crab by-products may serve as excellent nutritional components for future applications in the health and food sectors.

Not sure on the exact FDA regulations (seafood), but there is absolutely no margin of error for USDA (meat), unless the error is over.

I buy my seafood where they put a piece of wrapping paper on it and it's zeroed out. Then they pile the seafood onto the scale and I get the proper weight I am purchasing.

Just weigh something you know is at the exact weight.

Place a container on the scale and zero it out. Add 1 gallon of water, which weighs 8.34 pounds and see if it matches. If that's too heavy for your scale, divide the weight by half and use half of a gallon.

On a similar note, I have just about quit buying ribeye and filet mignon steaks from Sam's, because every time I would buy a pack of 3 or 4 steaks, there would always be at least one and sometimes two "end cuts" which are not nearly as good as the center steaks. When I buy whole ribeyes or tenderloins and cut them myself, I generally relegate the end cuts to shis kabobs.

The meat grains are going in different directions in the ends, and they are generally not as tender, or as aesthetically pleasing to the eye once cooked. They are quite sneaky when they package them to disguise them by putting them in the middle of the package and squeeze the regular cut steaks next to them so you cannot easily distinguish them from a regular steak.

Conversely, I very rarely see an end cut when I buy multi packs of steaks from Costco. Due to Sam's questionable practices, I now buy most of my steaks from Costco.

The number of posts wasn't the issue. No shock you don't get that though. You and tulane are both annoying as frick with no self awareness.
