Dude, I'm sorry this happened, but how on earth could it be a good idea to try to book a table for 20 people at relatively small sushi place that is busy on the weekend? Admittedly, they never should have taken the reservation, but, with all respect, the plan had disaster written all over it from the get go.

That's what I took away from this fiasco. It seems there is no point in making reservations there. I've been to plenty of small places that handles big groups perfectly.
I don't think I should have to expect disaster because of the size of my group. The waiter we had a Gordon took are of our whole table by himself, and he didn't even know a group our size was coming. He earned himself a mighty big tip.

I didn't read all that but I agree. I was going to defend the rule about seating only full parties last night but I think the OP probably already thought I was argumentative enough
I definitely get why the rule is in place, even if it's a pain in the arse.

Pretty much my exact thoughts on every single one of your posts

I can't say I agree with it. I didn't expect them to sit only half of us. But when 70% was there, and we ended saying we only needed space for 16 to try to compromise, they should have sat us.
If they had a line out the door, I would have understood. But when you have at least 20 empty tables, you probably shouldn't be rude and basically turning away customers that are ready to spend lots of money on a birthday dinner.
That manager's boss will probably not be too happy to hear about this.

quote:It doesn't cost any money to make a reservation. These days, you can't reserve a hotel room without a credit card. If you don't show or don't cancel by a certain time, you're still charged for the room. It's a very simple concept that people accept with reserving a hotel room, but are offended when presented with the same situation when reserving dining space.
Especially the $50 part. What was that for? It's not supposed to cost money to make a reservation.

Thing is, I 100% understand the credit card thing for a place that actually takes reservations in the true sense. But (at least in BR), Rock N Sake is one of those places that will "hold" a table for 5-10 minutes after the time you request and then give it away. Not that there's anything wrong with them doing that, but since it's not a real reservation where they're losing business because the table is held for a long period of time, I don't think the credit card thing should be done.
At a place like Gino's, Ruffino's, etc. where they hold your reservation a substantial amount of time BEFORE you arrive AND after the designated time, I would understand it.

DAMN. All this time! For some reason, I thought someone told me you were female and I just never thought twice about it. I'm sorry! :)
