Random Question, But Why Aren't All Bourbons Bottled In Bond?

Just the explanation of BIB makes it sound like anything less isn't the highest quality. Gimmick?

Just bought some BIB gin.
Very curious to see how it tastes. (Euphrosine out of New Orleans for those curious.)

BIB has very strict regulations, so it's easier to release based on each distillery's own standards. Some want to cut it down for consumers who don't want high proof whiskeys, while other releases are meant to be very high proof well over 100. BIB is sort of a marketing ploy to an extent, but it's also a history rich technique.

These days it is just a gimmick. Bottle in bond was useful when people were mixing ethanol and tobacco spit and calling it whiskey...no there is no reason for it. From a quality perspective BiB these days are no better than non BiB..but I sure as hell wouldn't wanna top out at 100 proof

No, I can buy that as a reason. But is there really a difference in taste or quality from 80 to 100?

it's done now for tradition than any other reason. proof goes as low as 86 and some over 141

Yes. The higher the alcohol content, the more oils and flavor in the liquor. That doesn't always mean higher proof tastes better though. Adding water and proofing a pour down will open up other flavors. Sometimes this is better, but it really all depends on the whiskey.
Distillers proof down their bottles for different reasons: consistency of flavor, sell more bottles per barrel, sell bottles cheaper. The benefit of buying high proof whiskey is you get more for your money in that you can proof it down to your liking or just sip at it's most natural proof. It gives you the consumer total control.

Yep. Under 100 proof whiskey definitely has it's place.
Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig small batch, etc beats out several BIB bourbons

BiB is a holdover from pre prohibition days. It was a way to ensure you were getting the real McCoy. Government oversaw the safe keeping and monitoring of bourbon, back when people were mixing it with all sorts of stuff.
The current BiB is still done the exact same way...it’s just unnecessary these days because we have a much stronger FDA and The TTB exists now

Finally somebody gave the right answer, it's basically just a government regulated product. It means that it is age for at least 4 years and 100 proof.
They had to put regulations on it back when people were mixing all kinds of shite that would make you go blind or even kill you

Agree on a that was said about not needing to be be BiB, but I still maintain that Evan Williams 100 proof is the best value in whiskey

The Heaven Hill 6 year BiB is pretty great too. Similar juice as the Evan Williams, but a little better because it’s only sold in Kentucky and they need less of it as opposed to the Evan Williams which is nationwide

Haven't had it, but I'm sure it's great. Had the EW in KY about years ago, was amped when it showed up in LA last spring

Pretty sure they don’t make that anymore. They aged it one more year and tripled the price now. If that is the same juice I’m thinking about.

It is. Yeah they did a fancy version, but you can still get it in Kentucky only and only at stores with a long HH purchase history. And still dirt cheap too. I always buy a case when I see it

The EW is partially to blame for my question actually. I mean, a 5th is only 14.98 compared to 13.98 for the 80 proof. The BiB tastes as good or better side by side. Picking the white bottle seems like a no brainer.
