Gym, I was against the smith machines at first. Now I realize I need to do something. Right now I'm throwing around a kettlebell and that's about it.

Thanks!

Sorry if this has already been discussrd, but does anyone have any advice on scales... Specifically ones that can measure body fat%?

I use the withings app, and they keep trying to sell me theirs.

The bodyfat scales are wildly inaccurate. Your best bet would be to have your bodyfat % measured in a bodpod. I think Baton Rouge has one. It runs about 75 bucks. You could have skinfold tests done with calipers but they can be really off as well depending on who does the measuring.

Seriously, just don't even bother wasting money on a more expensive scale that claims to measure body fat. It will be wrong. If you want to try and measure your body fat percentage you need to use calipers (still going to be wrong) or get a dexa scan...which probably isn't a feasible option.

This is the scale I own it seems to be pretty consistent. However I always use the "weigh one leg" trick to make sure it doesn't just automatically go back to the previous weight weighed. Call it paranoia or whatever, but I saw someone mention in the past that if you were within .2 or .4 pounds of your previous weight that the scale may just kind of stay where it was, so I always place one leg on and get a reading of about 20-25 pounds worth of pressure and then actually weigh.

Currently doing Strong Lifts which is very similar to starting strength (it has no cleans). That is a lift I've never done and wasn't comfortable attempting, so I stick to strong lifts. However, I watch video's constantly on Youtube from Mark Rippetoe (wrote starting strength) to get tips on how to do lifts properly.

I started around 2 months ago with very low weight: bar only on overhead press, 95 pounds on squats and bench etc.

I just had my first 5x5 failure on Bench at 155 this week (failed rep 25) and my squat today will be @ 210. It's a great program for beginners and I highly recommend it.

Ok so after reading the first 10 pages of this thread I've realized this is not your normal O-T thread were everyone with more that 4% body fat is ridiculed into oblivion.
My story: April of last year I was 305lbs going into brain surgery for a tumor. Now that I've fully recovered from most of the side effects of that even, I decided to make a life change and get in better shape and maybe live long enough to enjoy my grandchildren. (Whenever they get here)
Went to the doctor on August 6 and I was 290lbs.
This morning I'm 267lbs. I log all of my food daily on myfitnesspal app and I don't allow for any cheat days so far. I'm 5'9 and have always maintained a muscular frame from playing baseball, lifting weights and staying active.
I don't eat any fast foods, white breads, white rice or sugary snacks.
I only eat lean red meats instead of my past favorites like ribeyes and T-bones.
I work out 5-6 days a week with the main focus on cardio and building muscle. 20 minutes on the bike as soon as I walk in the gym followed by 3 sets of 10-15 on different machines or free weights, finished off with 30-45 minutes on the treadmill at different incline levels.
Hoping to get to 200lbs but I've previously been as low as 235 and was happy with my appearance and the way I felt.

quite the opposite.

to you!

Just so you know, I am 5'10, 3% body fat with a six pack on my six pack. I can do 400 pounds on the bench and run a 5.5 minute mile.

in lieu of measuring body fat, an alternative would be to measure your inches. at least do it in you waist.

at times if you're lifting weights and building muscle, you may not be losing weight, but the inches can be falling off. That will frick with people's head if you are not mentally strong.

That's for sure. None of my clothes fit and I've had to buy a new belt to hold up my pants. The scale doesn't change as often as I'd like it to but people are starting to comment on my looks so that's definitely a confidence booster.

I like weighing in after working out in the morning before I can eat anything, it's the lightest I will be all day!
