i'll do better than that. i'll give you chris carmichael's exact formula which you can put into excel. (chris is lance armstrong's cycling coach since the early 90s and i'm using his book to train for bike racing):

weight in kilos (multiple lbs * 2.2)
height in cm (multiply inches by 2.54)
age

plug this into excel (Mifflin-St. Jeor equation):

= (10*[weight in kilos]+(6.25*[height in cm])-(5*[age in years])+5) * [1.25]

The [1.25] is a variable and it is derived from here:

quote:

very light - most of workday is sitting or with some standing - relatively little physical activity - 1.25

light - work involves some sitting, mostly standing and walking - for example, retail sales - light recreational activyt - 1.55

moderate - work involves sustained physical activity with little sitting - for example, UPS or mail delivery person - active recreational pursuites. walk or bike to work - 1.65

heavy - occupation is physical labor - very active recreationally. few jobs all into this category - 2.0

quote:

calories burned during workouts
male body weight--------calories burned per hour
140----------------------------731
160----------------------------835
200----------------------------1044
220----------------------------1148

so at 240 you can see you'll burn more calories just due to weight alone.

HOWEVER..if you add an hour of aerobic activity keeping your heart rate elevated (15-20 minutes of P90x would be even more strenuous) you add roughly 1000 calories to the total (see above).

So for me, I burn 2,401 daily without any exercise and 3,501 if i include an hour of moderate erobic exercise like spinning on my bike and putting my heart in the 130-140ish bpm range.

comment from Chris on all this:

quote:

It is important to know that the process of calculating total daily caloric expenditure is not perfect. The Mifflin-St. Jeor equation is more accurate than others, but calculations are often less accurate than direct measurements. Using data from your power meter is one of the most accurate available outside a labratory.

heart rate monitors dont always tell you the whole story. they do quite a bit of guessing. the only surefire calorie burn you can quantify is by using a power meter (and those are expensive and only work for cyclists). eveything else is just software interpreting your numbers.

for instance, i plugged my ride data (including HR) into 4 different websites, and i got anywehre from 2,200 to 4,100 calories burned from the exact same HR data.

Yeah, that is kind of my point I guess. I did absolutely nothing aerobic yesterday. I took a day off of exercising. And, I work at a desk all day. I was shocked at the high number it said I burned.

The best I can say is that I did leave some chips and dip on the table with one tortillas but I still had plenty. Calorie wise it really wasn't bad but water weight will hit me tomorrow or the next day because that was probably 3 days of sodium at one sitting.

CAD703X - I tried your formula and it said I burn 5900 calories. I'm 5'7" 235. Can that be right? That seems completely off. Thanks

ok you missed something in the formula..i'll put you in at the lowest/lightest work-out level...hold on

eta i got 2,409 calories (at the 1.25 level).

i'm at 2,373 now since i'm down to 210. lost about 50 calories a day dropping 5lbs.

here's the exact formula in google docs spreadsheet:

D13 = weight in kilos (you are 106.82 kilos)
=round([weight in pounds]/2.2,2)

E13 = height in cm (you are 170.18)
= [height in inches] *2.54

F13 = age in years (42)

i rounded it to the nearest whole #

=round((10*(D13)+(6.25*E13)-(5*F13)+5) * 1.25,0)

I have officially made it 6 days without eating bread. Lunch today was hard though. We went to a crawfish hut and they brought me buttery toasted french bread with my boiled shrimp. I couldn't stop staring at the bread and finally had to throw it into the bucket my husband was putting crawfish shells in. Quitting chocolate is going to be so much harder because I crave sweets. I don't crave bread, it's just always there! Seems I always order something that involves bread and if don't order bread, the waiter brings a damn bread basket to the table!

it gets easier. atkins used to have a sourdough bread mix that was freaking incredible..haven't seen it in a long time though

i buy the sugar free chocolate peanuts in the bulk candy bins at kroger..yeah it gives you the shits if you eat too many..but a small handful is enough to tide me over and kills my chocolate craving.

also, i make chocolate protein shakes:

- gladiator protein (from smoothie king)
- 1 raw egg (yeah i know..but i've had a billiion raw eggs in my life and they aint killed me yet)
- dash of heavy cream
- ice
- 1/3 cup water
- vanilla extract

blend it up about 45 seconds and this is indistinguishable from a choclate shake from sonic or something. plus you're getting an assload of protein.

i do one of these about once a week when the chocolate craving gets to me

Congratz. Especially on the bread at the restaurant. Kudos. You did better than me today. The chips with bean dip and salsa got me today.

Skipping dinner. Going to have nothing but a grapefruit snack.
