The worst part about it was that I was at 233 about six months ago. My job kicked my arse as far as eating and exercising in the time that has passed since July.

I've been at it since December of 2008. That is when I found out I have congestive heart failure and had to do something about it or else. My doctor told me that the first time he saw me I probably would have been dead in three months if I wouldn't have done something about it.

My heart was enlarged due to cardiomyopathy and I had to have an ICD implanted, which is basically a pacemaker and defibrillator in one.

Since then I have just been at it and my life has changed a lot for the better, but I still have work to do.

Gonna start walking tomorrow now that the loss is slowing to help keep it going. My goal is 9/01/11. Hope I am not being unreasonable in aiming for that time frame.

Good Luck.

78 pounds in 7 months is pretty rough to hit. Having said that, we are here to offer support and listen to you vent when needed.

that is ambitious. i would talk to your doctor. most of the literature (i am a men's health mag whore..i take what they say hook line & sinker) ..anyway most studies agree 1lb/week is a healthy steady loss rate over a long period of time. i didn't quite average that over 2010..but i did have weeks where i'd lose 5-10lbs..and then many where i would lose .5 of a lb.

you're going to find the going gets harder as you get closer to your goal. i know you're high as a kite right now..but don't get discouraged if this rate of loss drops dramatically.

and remember the key is what you're PUTTING IN YOUR MOUTH. there's not enough exercise in the world or time in a day to make up for poor eating habits. exercise is fine..but that's not going to help you lose weight...sure you can increase the # of calories you burn in a day if you exercise..but consider it takes 3500 calorie deficiet to lose a single pound and you will quickly realize that you can't possibly get on an exercise program to keep that kind of calorie deficiet going. you'd kill yourself.

keep your calories under 2000/day or better yet..under 1500/day and you will lose it.

oh..and MOST IMPORTANT TIP OF ALL (besides avoiding the minefield of eating out) is this:

**DO NOT REWARD AN HOUR OF HARD EXERCISE WITH A MASSIVE DINNER**

i've watched people i ride bikes with go and pig out after we've been on a hard 2-3 hour ride and i just shake my head.

after working out is the BEST time to starve your body..because its hungry..and it will be looking for something to burn..if its exhausted the carbohydrate energy from your workout..its forced to guess what..? burn fat.

having a post workout slurpee or treaing yourself to a double-cheeseburger at mcdonalds will effectively erase what you just worked so hard for...in fact studies show people often OVEREAT after a workout so to add insult to injury..you've actually gained weight from the workout.

instead..enjoy the pain. have a post workout protein shake or a hard-boiled egg..then go to bed on that and you WILL WAKE UP a pound lighter.

eta2: i should clarify i do recommend getting exercise..but its not going to help you lose weight.

what it WILL do is keep your metabolism running at a higher rate and also the more muscle tissue you build, the less you have to worry the weight coming off is muscle instead of fat.

True.

Most people tend to think a hard workout burns a jillion calories when in fact it does not.

One celebratory meal could take 1 week to lose.

The main key is to take things a day at a time. Don't worry about how long it will take, just get yourself through today doing what you need to do.

The second key, is that making mistakes is not a reason to give up.

In the past I would be doing great then crack and cheat several days in a row and then it was over.

Back in June or July I had a real bad week of 4 taco bell trips in one week. That was more cheats than probably the previous 4 months combined. Normally, that would have been the end of my diet, but I went back to taking it a day at a time and not using those cheats as an excuse to quit.

absolutely.

if you continue the same behavior over the long haul and it generally works..stick to it even if you had a week-of-sin-at-thanksgiving or whatever.

just because you had a ridiculous week is no reason to [a] go on a crash diet immediately to try & undo it or [b] GIVE UP!!!

slow & steady wins the race..i had a 2-month plateau but knew what i was doing worked the other 10 months..so i didn't give up or try to change anything radically...and eventually my body quit fighting me and then poof, 5lbs down in a week with a steady decline afterward.

so in short, you wont blow 2 months (or 10 months) worth of work if you go visit your mom & dad and she feeds you chicken-and-dumplings for a week

What is amazing is how much energy the human body can extract from such a small amount of food, I have to walk about 15 miles to burn off the calories from a large milkshake. CAD's warning about binging after a hard workout is dead on.

I learned my leaason on Friday, had a 4 lb gain because I took my wife out to a big lunch the and then we sat around sitting bourbon while it was sleeting. Yesterday I held it down to 1200 calories and walked 4 miles, lost 2.5 of it.

Everyone be careful. A football game is no reason to go crazy.
