I don't think canned foods cause obesity but they certainly cause heart disease with some campbells soups having over 4k mgs of sodium per can. Same can be said for tv dinners, but nothing has as much sodium as soup.

The cheapness and availability of fast food and soft drinks would be the top reasons for obesity.

Absolutely. I honestly had no clue how bad fast food was until a few years ago. I knew it wasn't a healthy choice before then, but had no idea of the calories, fat, and carb content. It just wasn't something I thought about when I was a little younger.

On another note, 219.0 this morning. I finish finals today though and will be hitting the bar this evening to celebrate (and put a half pound or so back on . Got some good food cooked at home too, so I won't be eating unhealthy

myth..you are correct. given a choice of eating canned or processed food from grocery store vs eating out ANYWHERE..you would be better off getting something from grocery store every time. I'm ashamed to admit I eat better than my kids..I get tired of fighting with them so I'll feed them fish sticks and macaroni even though I wouldn't dream of eating that crap myself. no father of the year awards here.

we all do it but hey, i'm hoping that by eating mac and cheese out of a box, or a happy meal every now and then that when they get older and can make their own food decisions they won't go crazy with it.

last weekend my son got sick and lost 3 pounds in 3 days. (he's 3 years old so thats a lot). the doctor told me to fatten him up in case he needed to go to the hospital. so i went to walmart and bought all kinds of disgusting foods that i would NEVER normally buy. at the checkout i felt i had to apologize to the clerk and explain what i was doing with ice cream and frozen pizzas and snickers bars i was suprised at how CHEAP you can eat for when you buy junk, and also surprised that he refused to eat most of it when we got home. he asked for bananas and sandwiches and eggs. SO...back to what i was saying...a little laziness on our part every now and then is surely not a bad thing, because when it comes down to it, their little bodies will pick the right things when they're used to (mostly) eating well and feeling well.

It is a shock when you see how many calories are in fast food and a lot of restaurant food. Keep in mind, their mission is to feed you something which is satisfying and will keep you coming back, not to keep you healthy.

A tip, I keep the nutrition charts of most fast food places on my iphone browser, so if I have to eat quickly, I can find something suitable.

I started this on 8/1 and I'm down 40, this is the longest I've ever been on a 'diet', instead of getting tired of it, my momentum is building. I don't have to weigh and measure as much, I know what a safe portion is and err on the low side. Today I'm below 270 for the 1st time in 20 years. My 'gourmet' side is satisfied because I have learned that you can eat very well without a lot of calories.

congrats! its cliche, but it really is a life style change instead of a diet...you learn to change the way you shop, cook, select food, and decide portions. 40 pounds is awesome! stick with it...you'll add years on to your life ;)

i highly recommend 'temporary atkins' for anyone on a diet. especially if you're taking a different approach..do atkins for a month..i guarantee you'll lose 15-20lbs even if you've stalled out on a different diet.

its kind of the p90x approach..you're shocking your system with a completely different way of eating and as a result any metabolistic adjustment your body has gotten into a rut with..that is causing the stall...will bust open like an overripe melon.

you can always go back to your 'regular' diet afterward..its not like you go on atkins and are stuck doing it forever.

finally the best part about atkins is you really don't have to go hungry. i know it gets old eating wasabi almonds and steak..but you can do it for a month and it feels good to be on a diet where you can eat until you're full.

Even though I do atkins or low carb, I still count calories and eat low cal too.

I just can't force myself to believe I can eat 2k calories and lose weight.

323/226.8

Pissed off today. I somehow gained 1.5 pound eating my normal meal. Not sure how or why my body decided to hold on to everything I ate or drank yesterday.

i was thinking about the whole 2000 calories thing the other day. if i listen to my stomach and my body and only eat when i'm hungry...1000 calories is plenty. sometimes 800. i'm 5'3...i think 1000 calories is plenty for me. but everything i read says closer to 2000 (especially since i'm really active). do you think the recommended 2000 calories a day is another reason our country is fat? if you don't snack and eat a light breakfast, thats a LOT of calories to get from two meals.

try doing a day of major protein..when i've had problems in the past..i've found making a huge protein shake at lunch and drinking that really helps. its like the extra protein boost my metabolism or something...then i finish the day off with a gigantic steak.

and yes..as you pointed out..if you eat anything with a good deal of sodium..your body will definitely hold onto the water weight.

myth..physics don't lie..if you didn't consume 1 & 1/2 pounds of food yesterday..your weight gain HAS to be coming from water..so don't fret it.

ps smoothie king has some decent-tasting low-carb smoothies (choc, van, strawberry & banana). you might have to ask them for it though.

i like to get the banana one..then have them toss a couple of chunk of real banana into it..its delicous and filling.

This. Water fluctuation is natural. I've even heard that the body does a "fluid shift" about every three days. I don't have a link, but that came from a medical doctor I spoke to at work one day.

Your calorie intake has to do with weight, not height. You could be a sparkplug with a lot of muscle mass, or a twig, which would dramatically impact what you should/shouldn't be taking in, calorie-wise. I will say this though, 2 meals a day if you're trying to lose weight is not the way to go. Tough as it is when you're on the go, eating small meals every 3 or so hours is the best game plan.

I had triple bypass heart surgery three weeks ago. Never really read food labels much until recently, you are exactly right. I am on a low sodium, low fat diet. Have lost 9 lbs total after surgery. 213 / 204 My gosl will be 180 lbs. Can now walk 2 to 3 miles per day. I do get so hungry sometimes I can hardly stand it. Trying to eat smaller portions, but more often. Years of bad food choices and smoking are to blame for my problems. Didn't realize how good fresh air smells, and food can taste until quitting the cigs.

Breakfast

2 egg omelet with slice of cheese and sriracha

Lunch

Chicken thigh and salad tossed with olive oil and red wine vinegar.

Dinner

Hamburger patty salad tossed with olive oil and red wine vinegar.

Snack

Pepper jack cheese stick and wasabi almonds.

Sometimes I get crazy and have lunch for dinner and dinner for lunch.

No, I can't switch things up. I am broke and this is about the best I can do at the moment.

I was eating red beans with the chicken thighs, but I knocked that out because I wanted to get back into induction on Atkins.

That menu is right at about 1200 calories and 1200mgs of sodium per day.

Only about 90 days left of this and then I will do some maintenance and add a bunch of things back in.

Myth;'s diet definitely works, but if you knock out the sodium limit you can get a whole lot of variety in 1200 cals a day. Just saying

ETA: I'm only 23 so I don't worry about sodium intake. I work at a hospital and check my BP everyday I work just because I have access to reliable equipment. I haven't been over 125/85 in about 2 months. If you're older you should probably monitor this or your sodium intake more than I do.

Can't knock out the sodium. I have high blood pressure.
