Last of the fruit in my fridge today. Going to go back to keto after I'm finished with them. Time to go back to what worked for me.

Got the 4 mile run in this morning. Improved my pace and it felt great. Time to hit the golf course.

Wow! I disappear for a few days and war breaks out in the putta board.

Obvious troll is truly obvious.

There are some people who simply can't see reason or they are obvious troll being obvious. Given the post history, obvious troll is obvious.

I started a new weight loss competition and proceeded to immediately gain 7 pounds. I couldn't stop eating ice cream.

Now, I've had 4 solid Atkins days in a row. Thursday I must have hit the facilities no less than 10 times at work so I knew my old friend Ketosis was back.

I'm down 9 from the comp high which makes me down 2.

My BRAND NEW computer died yesterday and I was able to pass on the office donuts even though I was in need of comfort food.

I might not be around much until I can get my old computer working or the new computer working but since I built the damn thing, it is going to be a pain in the arse figuring out which component sent my computer into a death spiral.

Oh...169.9

yes and no.

someone who is used to a sedentary lifestyle (and i'm not saying this is a good thing) will stay much more motivated and lose weight rapidly just by cutting food intake. sure you need exercise but the amount of effort you have to expend to equal cutting down what you put in your mouth is VERY unbalanced...in favor of food.

i absolutely advocate no exercise initially for someone seeking to lose weight..the old engineering mantra 'dont change 2 things at once' applies here.

get your damn eating under control. thats 99.5% of the battle. dont complicate things by adding something..like lots of exercise..until you've got a handle on this.

exercise has the unique ability to make you HUNGRY. and until you've conquered the overeating demon, adding exercise of any type early in the process will doom you to failure.

guaranteed. if you don't injure yourself (putting yourself in a worse spot than you started with) you'll grow tired of the effort required to keep up exercising..you can't skip a day! especially if you haven't gotten eating under control.

exercise is overrated when it comes to losing weight. its a shame the media and government perpetuate the stereotype that you gotta exercise your fricking arse off if you ever want to get thin.

just not true. its such a disservice to people who need a solution that will work for them.

that solution is cutting down on your eating..and developing a lifelong habit of eating less.

after you've solved the MAJOR problem (eating) then knock yourself out with exercise.

I agree with everything but:

you can't skip a day!

If you're doing some weight training, yes you can. And you should. If your workouts are intense (not a brisk 30min walk), you need a rest day here and there to recover. I usually do 2 days on, one day off.

That being said, eating is 80-90% of losing weight, imo. 90% if your exercise is light, like a brisk 30 minute walk.. you burn very little calories that way, and that light exercise doesn't do much to increase your metabolism, either.

you missed my point..i wasn't being literal..what i meant was it takes SO MUCH WORK to lose a single pound (3,500 calories to be exact) by exercising..that if you're going this route, getting off-track and missing any workout will just make it that much harder.

working out to lose weight makes about as much sense as using a pair of scissors to cut the grass in your front yard.

sure, you can do it but the time it takes and the effort it takes is much greater than using a lawnmower.

ps i dont think i can make it any clearer than this:

1. lets say you eat 2800 calories a day and you're maintaining your weight

2. you add a 1-hour run each day (thats a legit amount of work right??) adds about 500-600 net calories to what you're already burning now.

3. it will take *SIX* days (600 * 6 = 3,600) (assuming you dont eat a single calorie more of food during this time) to lose one pound.

SIX HOURS OF HARD EXERCISE for a single pound loss.

******************************
******************************

4. instead you cut your calories from 2800 a day to say 1400 (anyone can live on 1400 calories).

5. in same 6 days, you've reduced your calorie intake by

EIGHT-THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED CALORIES

thats almost 3 lbs.

effort:::?????

not much of anything. you continue to eat a good bit of food and don't have to lift a damn finger all week or even walk to your mailbox.

which scenario is going to work here?

I see what you are talking about. Take into account that there is a chance of your metabolism slowing down at 1400 cals for a guy, particularly very big people.

But I think everyone is in agreement that diet is the biggest part of losing weight in any scenario. Exercise helps speed it up by creating a bigger deficit (assuming you don't mess up that deficit by eating more after the workout) and better for an overall healthy lifestyle. But if your goal is simply weight loss, focusing intensely on the diet and maybe adding some light exercise that won't leave you starving afterwards will go a long way.

I had a super diet weekend but i switched brands on the turkey burgers and i just noticed a massive difference in sodium. 680 to 200. So even though my cals were dabout 1300, iwent up this morning.

Cals today were around 1550 but sodium was through the roof with the mothers day breakfast.

Oh, butterball turkey burgers blow the everloving crap out of those waterlogged tasteless jenni o burgers.

Well this weekend wasn't horrible. I had my first cheat yesterday morning for breakfast. Today was good until dinner tonight, I made breakfast and ate a little too much. I did see 278.8 today but it wasn't at my official weigh in.

So officially today was 302/281.4/245

Thankfully I will be back in my routine tomorrow. Well I'm going to do a fast so not quite normal.

Oh and my cheat meal yesterday nearly made me throw up. I didn't eat a ton of food, it just didn't sit well with me.

the 'metabolism slowdown' myth is as bad as the 'turning fat into muscle' or 'fasting causes you to lose muscle mass'

all 3 of those sayings are worthless. you don't turn fat into muscle LMAO. you can build up your existing muscles..but Midas the Fat-Into-Muscle magician doesn't live here.

Ok, so my point hulk, is know thy BMR (basal metabolic rate). Assume its always the 'sedentary' version (I do) and keep your calories under that to lose weight. Mine is around 1800 calories a day I think.

the whole 'metabolism slowdown' is horeshit. Use the BMR as a rule of thumb and go on about your business without worrying there's some bogeyman called 'metabolic slowdown' waiting to sabotage your weight loss.
