I'll do some research over the next few days. I'm not new to the weight loss game. I lift 5-6 times a week and have lost a substantial amount just doing basic shite. I like challenging myself and trying new things though and I see y'all mofos talk about how much better y'all feel going without so many carbs

Subtract fiber and sugar alcohols.

Look at The Perricone Promise too. Not saying do his diet, or buy his products. But what he has to say about inflammation and anti oxidants is good to have in your back pocket for when you get to or are approaching your target weight.

*some sugar alcohols. Erythritol is good. Xylitol and Sorbitol ok. Avoid maltitol, isomalt, etc.

Keto works well, but I am loving my diet. It's not a 'diet' really.. I just don't eat sugary processed crap most of the time. 40/30/30 macro split at 1900-2000 cals/day gives me tons of flexibility to enjoy food while also losing weight. Most of, but not all, of my carbs come from tubers, squashes, and gourds. I do eat either grits or oatmeal for breakfast every morning, though. I feel like this is how you maintain a diet for a lifetime. Eventually I hope to be able to just eat without tracking everything in MFP and be healthy, but given the fact that I have had an unhealthy relationship with food for 27 years, I know that self regulation without tracking is not something that comes naturally to me.

Just wanted to throw that out there, stepping off of my soapbox now.

What was wrong with straight keto? Did you plateau?

I enjoyed keto but it always felt so limited. Now if I want some pasta, rice, beer, ice cream etc I can fit it into my macros and calories and it doesn't affect me much, as long as I don't go crazy. It's very much a 'moderation' diet, but I very closely track my calories. I'm not as nuts about making my macros as long as I get my protein in.

The sad thing about those oats and grits is the fact of what is in them. You shouldn't need to "enjoy" food. It should become a means to an end. You're hungry, eat....that is it. Don't get me wrong, you've come a long, really long way.

I disagree entirely about enjoying food, but enjoying good food doesn't mean I have to eat tons of it. That is the biggest hurdle for a fatty like me to get my head around. It also means redefining some of what 'good food' is. It is not fast food, it is a good steak with potato wedges and a salad for example. Majority of my days I don't eat ice cream and beer and stuff, but I do in some moderation.. Because I enjoy these things and I don't think I have to give them up completely to be reasonably healthy.

Keep in mind that my goal is not to be shredded or jacked. I just want to be healthy and strong.

Agreed. Food is fuel.

The line about you are what you eat is real. If I eat crap, I feel that way. My brain does, anyway. Maybe not my body at first, but if I ate grits or starchy carb type foods day in, day out, I'd go back to feeling lethargic, irritable, and in a fog no matter what portion/serving size I had.

That's because you're from south LA.

Get over it. "In other places they eat to live, but in New Orleans we live to eat" used to be something I lived by.

frick that. How many obese 85 years olds do you see walking around?

You can eat well, have a cheat once or twice, hell 3/4 times a month, and enjoy life.

I don't think that you would. Most people over consume refined carbs and sugar and that's where the problems really begin. Especially sugar. That shite is da debil.

I would probably do better if I swapped out the morning grits or oatmeal for sweet potato or something, but convenience plays a large factor there.

Absolutely agree with that.

The cheats have to be smaller the more frequent they are, too.

Hulk, you know better. Starch and carby. I don't try to say food is easy. It is just simple. Hell, I gorge on crap food time to time, and guess what, I feel like crap after as BR mentions above. The point being - once you reach a certain place, those foods mostly don't bother you. Cravings aren't as much an issue anymore.

I've been following your journey since you started in the old thread. I believe you know what to do. I look up to you. Where you've come from and your journey. I've never been a big guy, but I know the cravings of food. My body can luckily handle (somewhat) the damage I've caused. But I couldn't handle the depression associated with the food I ate. So when I say I cheer for you, I remember my struggle with depression and how food effected my mood.

White potatoes may not be the best of foods, buy I have had a fundamental shift on my view on carbs. I dont view carbs as the enemy anymore..sugar is. Processed crap, including refined carbs, is.

In any case everyone has to find their own path to health. I thin I've found my own long-term diet that I will be successful with.

I appreciate your kind words. They mean a lot and im happy that changing your diet has helped you defeat your depression. I am fortunate enough to not have to face that and I am happy. My life is going very well right now.

I will admit, though, that I was starting to worry that I was depressed recently. I was constantly tired no matter how much I slept, lethargic, and unmotivated at work. That was a major motivating factor for me to go back to keto months ago, but I still felt the same way. Turns out my thyroid function is low. Since hopping on 50mcg of synthroid I'm back to my old self and feel great.
