The only legit good fried chicken I've had from a grocery store was the Piggly Wiggly in Mt. Pleasant SC, even out of the box sitting on the warmer. It was excellent, always. I don't know what their secret was. Maybe extra corn starch in the batter. It never got sad or soft. This was 20 years ago when I lived there.

Piggly Wiggly
Great grocery for meats and local products, but unfortunately dying away. Several in Acadiana are now Lyon’s Mart, and the one in Jennings that has the new store name isn’t the same as prior.

Chicken tenders a far superior, although wings fresh out of the fryer are great. Who knows how long everything was sitting out, so that's a gamble you took. Their dinner specials are pretty affordable and taste good. Buffalo dip is hard to beat. Overall the deli fantastic if you get things made to order vs. prepackaged. I miss easily picking up Boar's Head meats.

Has every publix I've ever been to been a "bad" Publix?
Apparently. I've never had an issue with their deli.

I've only had Publix fried chicken once and it was damn good

Cannata's in Houma. I kid you not, if they did a spicy version I'd never go to Popeye's again. And it's cheap too. Eight piece box mix is like 10 bucks.

Publix is the Ed Hardy shirt of grocery stores.
Reliably high quality, conservative, unpretentious/non-showy to the point of being dull
Yeah, great comparison here

Believe it or not Winn Dixie has some damn fine fried chicken.
The Winn Dixie in Auburn had very good fried chicken. There's an Aldi there now, though. Nothing wrong with Publix fried chicken, though I would never buy a box of chicken that looks like that.
