I’ve been hearing from local grocery stores that the price of beef and pork will be almost doubling in the next few weeks.

Example: ground beef will be $7-$8 / lb.
$5 / lb for Boston Butt

Anyone else hearing this?

I went to the grocery store earlier and they had 80/20 ground beef at $6.99/lb for small packs and $6.49lb for the bigger value pack. That's all they had too, none of the leaner grinds.

I've got a freezer of beef and pork, but I can never keep chicken in there long. Looks like I'll be sticking to mail order straight from farmers now.

do you typically get advanced notice on all of their pricing moves, or just meat?

I play cards with one of the store owners, and friends with another.

It's not a big town and most everyone knows each other.

Just got back from Zuppardo's. They had Smithfield half (smoked) and full (honey) shank hams for .99 cents a LB. Rouse's has whole beef tenderloin for 6.99 a LB.
I think the worst is yet to come..

Rouses has whole select beef tenderloins on sale for $6.99 a pound. Think it said on the pack that its a saving of $11.99/pound.

ETA: It is select, however, my friend's was choice at the same price, so maybe not every Rouses is the same.

I was in Rouses yesterday and saw their tenderloins on sale and it was "Select" grade, not "Choice" in the Mid-City store.

The 3 top grades are Prime, Choice and then Select.

$1.01 a lb. more than I paid last week at Rouses, but still a good price when not on sale.

Rouses will put their 2 packs of pork butts on sale at least every other month or so at $.99 a lb.

Same with chicken leg quarters in the 10 lb. package at anywhere from $.39 to $.69 a lb. and chicken split breasts, usually 4 to a pack for $.99 a lb.

That is when I usually stock up on these products for the freezer.

Why is meat becoming scarce. Are meat processing plants shut down? Why? Are they not essential? Can they not find enough workers?
