cheese wiz

this really threw me for a loop up there. it appears that cheese wiz is the "default" configuration for them. first place i went to they were like "u want cheese wiz" and i was like "absolutely not wtf"

turns out every place did same thing. did provolone on all mine

Yeah, I think the term in philly is “wit”, as in wit cheese wiz. “Wit-out” yields a sandwich with no cheese.

Ishkabibble's is good. I agree with those saying skip Geno's and Pat's. I lived up there for a while and none of them wowed me, honestly.

"Wit'" and "wit'out" refer to onions, not cheese.

Identify your cheese first, then say "wit'" or "wit' out" onions.

For example, "wiz wit'."

Get the roast pork sandwich with broccoli rabe at John's while you're at it, which for my money was the superior sandwich.

I concur

Surprised that type of sandwich doesn’t show up on any menus around Nola. It’s legit

And gotta get some crab fries from Chickie and Pete’s to go with it

Jim's in South Philly is great.

Prince of Steaks in the Northeast and in Center City is an awesome cheese steak.

Get the Whiz!

Same. Thought eating a Philly in Philly would be heavenly, but it really wasn't that much different from the Phillys I can get here.

I mean, it's not like they have special or unique ingredients

Appreciate all the responses. Think I’ll swing by either Dalessandros or Tony Luke’s. It’s really more of a when in Rome thing for me so I’m sure either will be fine.

John's Roast pork. Either cheese steak or roast pork.
Plenty of parking, not in tourist or city area, on the end of town that you will go by. (I think)

Don't order with wiz. Unless you want to completely understand Philly fans. Lol.

LaSpada’s in Aston, PA. Or any location. Or any Mom & Pop grocery in Eddystone, PA.

Had many a fun night in Aston, PA :) My best friend was the 1st GM of the Hooters Concordville/Aston.

I remember going to Hooters and Firewaters before they opened while they were still under construction.

One night we were cook steaks at his place in Aston when we got a call Joe Frazier was at Hooters. We pulled our steaks off the grill, brought them to Hooters and made Joe Frazier taste it.

Good times in PA. I miss it. I hope the OP has fun.
