From what I've read in this thread it's been a lot of constructive criticism.
1. Get better taps
2. Hire better staff
3. Figure out your Identity
I wouldn't call it constructive criticism. These have been the same gripes about PH since day one. Ownership obviously does not care. It's a nice place, the right management could really do a lot with it.

Are they really though? In the grand scheme of things, they are very much similar and direct competitors, who just happen to be a few feet from each other.

Not really constructive criticism, more so butthurt.

Eh. I don't look at them as competition. One is a beer bar. One is not.

Isn't the Pelican House supposed to be a beer bar that just serves food? I mean CBD serves food now as well

I think if you think of Pelican as a beer bar, you are going to be disappointed.
With the live music, the cover charge, the food/Sunday brunch, etc. it is clear that they don't consider themselves a beer bar either. Which is totally fine IMO.
The owner of CBD will tell you himself that being a strictly beer bar isn't going to get you the massive crowds every night. He just can afford it and it is his passion. I don't blame Pelican for catering to the majority.. their rent is astronomical. They just should avoid putting on events like they did yesterday for a cover.

It is a 'beer bar'. Whatever anyone wants to say about whatever it is, it was opened and intended to be a beer bar with a big whiskey selection.
This is the description on their website.

We strive to provide the Baton Rouge area with an extensive selection of fine beer, spirits, and wine in an upscale, comfortable environment. Our impressive selection of beers and whiskeys and courtyard coupled with unparalleled service standards set us apart from the rest.
The Pelican House possesses one of the largest whiskey and beer selections, not only in Baton Rouge, but Louisiana and the South. We also feature a small, well-crafted food menu, along with a brunch menu offered Saturdays and Sundays.

quote:well yeah, me going so often I've had several chats with the owner and managers of CBD. I wonder how much more the rent at Pelican is vs CBD as I am sure they pay more for a larger place. Maybe the reason why the shenanigans.

I'm by no means sticking up for them because everything I have read is a valid grievance. To this specific event though it seems like they just weren't clear about how it was going to work. They never said free beer. It was a poor way to describe what was happening but I think they should not be blasted over it so bad because of poor marketing. I have only been several times and know the owners. They are all really good guys just trying to run a bar, this thread hopefully makes them aware of problems that can be fixed pretty easily.

Advertising correctly certainly wouldve helped, it was still a rip-off for $30 though.

Thanks for having the integrity to post your thoughts. You've made many aware of this place's type of operation.

Why on earth would they bring someone else to cater an event inside their own restaurant. I'm having a very hard time figuring that part of this story out. I mean what does that say about their food?
Posted on 5/17/15 at 7:14 pm to BigJake
That really confused me too. Despite some of the posts about their food, I think it's decent. I like the buffalo chicken thighs and their shrimp appetizer a lot. Also the nachos. Seems like they could have served their own food that they get at wholesale cost anyway and then scratched the cover charge.
My initial guess is that they got it catered to bring in "different" food than their regular offerings, but that can't be the reason either because they do beer dinners all the time, making it evident their kitchen knows how to deviate from the menu successfully.

Bartender at BWW on Bluebonnet might be hiding for their own safety

Yep .. it's happened there ... It is also happening at a lot of places where you used to get impeccable bar service too ..

BWW on bluebonnet is really bad about this. I'm talking 5-10 minutes away from bar kind of bad.
