At least (2) restaurants in my area are charging for sales tax than prescribed by law. Presumably they are pocketing the extra.

Well, what did management say when you confronted them about it?

One of the places couldn’t exactly answer why they were charging more and I didn’t have the exact rate from the city until the next day.

Sort of same with the other place which was in a different town: Didn’t have hard numbers until after I left.

At what rate did they overcharge?

In one instance 12% on what was later determined to be a maximum legal rate of 8%.

Man I'm sure you had a computer in your pocket that you could've looked that up in a matter of seconds. You know, your cell phone?

You will be mocked here

But legitimately a good catch. I’d pepper them until u get a satisfactory response.

I’d also nuke em on Yelp and google.

What was the date and jurisdiction? Inside or outside city limits? 7/1 is a typical date for increases. Add annexation, etc. & you have no idea how complex transactional taxes can be.

I reported one of them to the municipality. Haven’t set foot in either since.

Could there be a separate restaurant tax? I know Richmond, VA has a separate a separate restaurant tax(including fast food). Basically why I avoided eating in city whenever possible, while living in area. And if I did have too, normally Sheetz or WaWa. If not, contact local news.

Did they lump in a credit card tax with the sales tax?

New POS are able to add a different fee but some are older and putting credit card fees elsewhere and not being called out properly.

Hell in new orleans every block seems to have a different tax rate because of special districts and fees.

Are you going to name the restaurants? Is this going to be taco bell and burger king?
