Lots of great recommendations. Thanks everyone.

Look up Allen's Welding on YouTube. I got the 40" reverse flow about a year ago and it has been outstanding. Highly recommend and it is within you price range for the size you are looking for. Can also be used for smoking or direct grilling.

His pits look awesome but it looks like he's in Shreveport? It probably wouldn't make sense for me as I'd have no economical way to move it.

Got one recently. It’s a Cadillac. Best offset I’ve ever owned.
I drive by them now and then. I've never heard of anyone using their pits. Curious how you found them and what made you pick them? That space shuttle smoker they made is awesome.

I had never heard of them before a couple months ago. Then a guy I know posted one he was selling on Facebook. Said it was a great pit, he just didn’t use it enough. I did a little research and found it was a 3K pit new, and he was selling for 1K. This is the type of guy who keeps his things immaculate. So I bought it. Even though I didn’t really need it

I have been cooking on a gator pit for 15 years, although mostly grilling. Many make tailgate pits that slip into a 2" receiver. Gator pit has an option to add a cargo carrier. You not only get a pit but also ice chest storage all in one.
Fantastic for football games.

Very nice!
I think they finally sold it, but this was always an eyecatcher when driving by their shop. That brewery never took off btw. I wonder if they repoed it

I took a utility trailer up there a picked mine up - about 3 hours one way. It was worth it for the price.

I tried to buy from Allen a few months ago. He wouldn't answer emails and apparently doesn't have a phone. I won't do business with someone I can't get in contact with.

What's with that Shirley site? It seems that when you try to look at details of the individual pits, that there's some error with the site.
This reverse-flow stuff is interesting.

They haven’t updated their site in years. Best thing to do is follow their Instagram. I had one of their trailer models, Finnish is excellent. But they have developed a cult following to an extent. Family is nice as can be though.

Whichever builder you choose, look out for sloppy welds and vagueness on how thick the steel is. Those would be major red flags.

I settled on the Old Country Brazos Deluxe (DLX) model. It's $100 more than the regular Brazos but has a counterweight and tuning plates. Mainly, I just wanted the counterweight.
Thanks all for the recommendations.

I'd ditch the tuning plates and figure out what type of deflector if any at all you need to make it run the best. I recently cut mine out because it was pushing the heat too far down the chamber. Don't be afraid to play with the exhaust damper to help even out temperatures either.

I'm actually eyeing these aftermarket tuning plates made for my pit. LINK
They go across the length of grill whereas the plates that come with the pit only cover about half for some reason.
ETA now I'm not so sure about that. I may just find some metal plates and lay them across with spacing.
