Again, many thanks for sharing this with us. I've had the Bogle and joel Gott wines you listed, and concur that they are great value. Will look for the rest. My current favorite bargain wine is Shooting Star Chardonnay - its Jed Steele's economy winery. Dorignac's, a local grocery, has it for $6.99 a bottle - an amazing steal at that price.
Thanks plawmac. I don't think I've seen the Shooting Star chard. I'll be on the lookout for it.

1. Catena Malbec Mendoza 2008

One of Argentina’s top producers, this is a bit of a fudge on my part since the retail price is slightly over $20, but it sells at Costco for $18 so I’m putting on the list. The ‘08’s are quickly disappearing from the shelves so what you’ll probably find is the 2009 & 2010. Both are out now and both are good, although the 2010 is definitely not ready to drink. Price: $18

2. Ben Marco Malbec 2009

Another malbec from Argentina, this one is mixed with 8% bonarda. Price: $16.

L.A. I must say that you have exquisite tastes. Malbec is my favorite wine by far. I went to Mendoza last year and toured many vineyards. THeir wine beats the hell out of anything from California

Thanks, bro. Isn't Mendoza beautiful? I used to live in Buenos Aires and loved travelling to wine country in Mendoza. Argentina's Malbec used to be the best kept secret in the wine world, but not any more. And for the Argentines, I'm glad. Their wines deserve to be widely known and appreciated.

Hey, did you see Mt. Aconcagua while you were there? Growing up in flat New Orleans like I did, Mt. Aconcagua took my breath away the first time I saw it.

Where have you been able to find the Greywacke? We've also been drinking lots of SB in the Crickets household.
Panny, the only place I've been able to find it so far is my local Costco. Fortunately they keep in in stock, and they have really good prices too.

Btw, I read recently that Costco is now the largest wine retailer in America.

Ripe summer blueberry and blackberry combined with spice box and camphor leap from the glass in the hedonist’s dream of a wine. The combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Syrah has created a wine that shows both elegance nuance and raw power on the palate. Soaring acidity and firm tannins create wonderful balance and complexity in the finish. Enjoy!

I buy from them on occasion. Have probably placed maybe 20-25 orders over the last several years. A very good company to do business with. The only thing I would caution about is buying from them during the summer and having the wines shipped while the weather is hot. After having two separate shipments ruined by excessive heat (I got full refunds on both occasions) I learned to have the wines held until the weather cooled down. They will hold the wines at no cost.

I know this is a little of topic but could someone recommend a decent sparkling wine/ champagne in the $12-16 range? I would like to give some out to my employees but I know nothing about wines/champagnes.

Yes, I loved it. Stayed at a great hostel with this old psyhopathic lady from New Zealand who hitchhiked the whole continent of africa at the age of 21.

I read in the Food section of the LA Times a few years ago that the actor Mel Brooks serves the Blackstone Merlot as his house red. That surprised me considering how rich the guy must be.

It's a great everyday wine and a fantastic value.

Most restaurants in Lafayette carry the Blackstone Merlot and I can also buy bottles of it at Marcello's Winery here in Lafayette. Always enjoy 2 glasses everyday. A good glass of wine is one of the best small pleasures in life in my opinion

LA - Have you tried any wines from J Rickards winery? My cousin owns it and I only had it a few times - I've always been a Scotch guy and have only had his wines on special occasions with dinner.

I am starting to try different wines. But would like an honest opinion on the winery before recommending it to friends.

Doesn't ring a bell. Do you know where the winery is located?

Do you think you could do a list of wines between $25-40/what kind you recommend in this price range?

Any particular wines (grapes) that you like? It might be easier to go that way.
