Neither. Put your ingredients and ice in a martini shaker, shake 40 times (got that tip from New Orleans bartender Chris McMillan), then pour into a chilled glass. If you use a good tequila, the salt on the rim is superfluous.

I prefer a good rocks margarita, but most places use terrible syrups. When using same poor quality ingredients, frozen tastes less medicinal than rocks, so I usually go frozen.
