You have to pretty much go smell for smell.
Bake something
Fry something
Or shite on the floor

Take out a cheap pot and boil a few cloves and some coffee beans, open the windows while you at it.

How about opening a couple of windows?

Since when is the smell of onions a bad thing? It doesn't reek, it is perfumed by the smell of onions. Cook some garlic and it will smell even better.

I have French onion soup simmering on the stove right now. I've never had a problem with a lingering unpleasant smell.

I love the smell of caramelized onions. I forget which TV Chef said that he caramelizes onions sometimes just for the aroma, so I'm not in the minority. That and making chicken stock are probably two of my favorite smells.
