We are heading to Louisville next week for a mini-vacation and would love some recommendations for bars and restaurants.

We'll be staying downtown. We have reservations for a Mammoth Cave tour Wednesday morning so if there are any good places nearby for lunch, I'm interested.

Looking to try regional cuisine, like a Hot Brown, soup beans, burgoo. I know the Brown Hotel is the birthplace of the hot brown, but if there is a place that's better, I'd rather go there.

Also, where is the best Mint Julep?

Cannot recommend La Bodeguita enough. Louisville has a large Cuban population and it’s really authentic and delicious Cuban food. Great atmosphere too.

Also, I know Angel’s Envy isn’t some secret distillery, but their tour is really great and they have an awesome bar inside the distillery with creative bourbon cocktails that’s only accessible to those who take the tour.

Menu looks awesome, I love Cuban food

We are taking the Bourbon Trail on Thursday and I was hoping Angel's Envy was on our tour, but it's not. We may still try to take the tour on our own, depending on time.

Went last year for a weekend. Stayed at the Omni. Pretty nice. Went to bar vetti and it was fine. A little too Instagram able for my taste. Le moo had an excellent brunch. Ive heard good things about fat lamb and black rabbit. Jack Fry's is legendary but look at reservations ASAP if you intend on going. I recently popped in to michters looking for a 10 year rye or bourbon. Be aware that they do random releases throughout the day. Sometimes 11 or 1pm. Only thing at open will be spots for bottle your own which I have heard is a cool experience. The bars supposed to be nice but it wasn't open yet when I was there. Angela envy tour was also highly recommended to me by a friend. Not many of the other distilleries in Louisville do regular releases.

What distilleries are you going to? Guided tour or driving yourselves?

Looks like two of my top 3 spots closed during covid (Butchertown grocery, Harvest)

But #3 Pizza Lupo remains. Good little pizza joint

Proof on Main
Jack fry
Butchertown Bakery

Their regional cuisine sucks fwiw. Go for the bourbon. There are several spots near downtown (old forester, angels envy, rabbit hole).

Don't disagree. Soup beans, banana croquet, burgoo and a hot brown don't hold a candle to gumbo, courtbullion, etc but they're worth a try. I would eat red or white beans and rice every time over soup beans and cornbread, but I'm biased.

We are taking a guided tour. I know the first stop is Rabbit Hole, I can't remember the others. Honestly, I waited so late to book, I was just happy to find something available. Rabbit Hole looks cools, though, and we're not picky, so it will be fine.

Curious of your opinion of a hot brown... The missus is from KY and likes them, I was very underwhelmed... still plenty to take in, in Louisville... enjoy!

So a single guided tour of rabbit hole, or a guided tour with multiple stops via a bus? Do you have transportation to check out anything in bardstown, makers mark, buffalo trace etc? Do you have any interest in trying to get an allocated bottle? No judgement either way, just want to know so we can make recommendations that suit your interests.

It's a guided tour with multiple stops. I pulled up the info and we're doing Rabbit Hole, Buffalo Trace, and Bulleit.

We are driving in from Tennessee so we will have the truck for anywhere we'd like to go that's not walkable. I know we'll probably check out the racetrack, even though it's not race season. But yeah, recommendations outside of town are great, too!

That's a good way to do it. I don't know about rabbit hole, but BT will definitely have either ER, WSR, Blanton's, or EHT small batch unless you get there after 1 or 2pm. Bulleit won't have anything special. It's pretty modern and a nice juxtaposition to old school stuff like BT.

If you decide you want to go do some more tours or chase allocated bottles, heaven Hill in bardstown is about an hour away, but you'll need to be in line by 830 to get a bottle if it's something good like whh17, parkers heritage, EC18.

Four roses usually has several of their recipes in the 9-10 year range barrel strength. Their coxs creek location is close to bardstown. Their main gift shop is in Lawrenceburg which is close to Woodford reserve and wild turkey. Wild turkey is a very pretty overlook of the KY river. Woodford is probably the prettiest distillery I've been to. Neither of them are likely to have anything allocated.

If you think you will have had enough bourbon touring after your guided tour, you could just pop into michters and hang out at the bar around noon and see if they put something out. If you want more tours I would do makers, Woodford, and maybe heaven Hill. If you want to chase bottles do heaven Hill early with a swing through of four roses coxs creek and finished with the michters hang out strategy.
