I will not do business with local folks selling foreign crawfish, period. It's like a slap in the face to me. Business owners must make their own decisions. I may well be in the minority.

I'm not going to not do business with locals for that, but I sure won't buy crawfish tails from them. Like I said earlier, my store Reeves, stocks both and leaves it up to the consumer to make their choice, so I fashion it as a kind of washing of the hands and letting the people decide whether they will choose Christ or Barabbas.

In any case...

Notice how deceptive it is? French name like Bernard on Chinese Crawfish Tails.... They are the devil I tell you. The devil.

I've been in a lot of local Louisiana seafood joints and I can only think of two that had foreign tails. Saw the tails before I bought, so I departed the premises and went elsewhere. Too bad, too, because both times, I was looking for 6-7 pounds of jumbo lump and a good many shrimp, plus a supply of crawfish tails. I'm a jumbo lump addict, in addition to being a seafood addict, in general. I'm a frequent seafood shopper. It's a habit.

A very good habit IMO too. I don't shop as much as I'd like, but to be honest, BR really does SUCK when it comes to fresh seafood. There are a couple of places that are way out the way for me, but I do frequent, however, the two best around here I've seen are in Gonzales. Pretty accomodating, and fresh. Could ask for some more inventory at times, but still better than most in BR.

I tend to agree. Off The Hook does a pretty good job and has fresh gulf fish, and whole foods can't be beat on freshness and variety. The boiling places like Jimbos are pretty one dimensional. Tony's is good for shellfish. I want a fish market at the overpass.

If you're ever in Lafayette, Chez Francois on Evangeline Thruway, not far from I-10, consistently has the most beautiful jumbo lump I've seen anywhere. One of my local seafood sources goes there a few times a week and brings it back to sell. Their prices are always reasonable as well. I think $21 is about the highest I've seen it and that's even buying it from my guy.

One thing I noticed is that in Baton Rouge, gulf fish or fresh fish in general is a hard sale. So many people come in looking for only catfish and tilipia. Whole foods had an advantage because they 1)have so many customers rolling through their store and 2)have lots of money to back up the waste. I'm sure whole foods throws out a lot of fish because fresh fish goes bad in a fish case in 2-3 days. With the cold air hitting the fillets, they just don't hold up.

I asked the counter guy that question once. He said that they do move a ton of fish, smoke some in house, and dump very little. He said they have the buying trends down and are getting more efficient. Lucky them.

LA BOILERS on Oneal has them... 12.99 or 13.99 a lb. they are from Tony's. I believe Tony's has them for $2.00 less per lb, but i guess that is what you pay for not driving out to Tony's.

Yep it is possible. Especially with the numbers of customers they have going through that store. Have never been in there when it wasn't packed. Especially on the weekends, it's like a zoo in there.

I will not, however, do business with a locally owned joint of any kind, who sells foreign crawfish in this state. There are plenty of other options, thankfully.

do you feel differently about shrimp? i believe we are the #1 US producer of those as well

I would buy LA tails if Winn Dixie offered them. Why they didn't have them I don't know. Maybe the LA fisherman ran out.

I've got a lb of chinese tails in my freezer. What should I do with them? Are they OK to feed to the cat?

Went to Rouses week of mardi gras all crawfish tails were from china and the gumbo crabs were from mexico. WTF, I left that crap in their freezer. I got some wild caught crawfish tails in Georgia product of spain, not bad at all.

My cat from DC loves them. The one from LA spits them out.

Problem is you're buying seafood from a chain grocery store, try a seafood market.

Don't know where in Georgia you are, but they usually have crawfish tails from Henderson at the Dekalb Farmer's Market in Decatur. LINK
