Space is an issue, so probably looking for a vertical propane smoker. Nothing fancy or too large. Looking to keep it under $200.

Any suggestions?

Also, are there any electric smokers that approach the same level of nearly zero effort to operate (set and forget) like a crock pot?

I want to be able to prep a Boston butt before I go to work and let it smoke all day to be ready around the time I get home

I'm pretty sure Masterbuilt makes a propane smoker in that price range. I have a Masterbuilt electric and I'm perfectly satisfied with it.

I have a masterbuilt propane. It is big. Too big for my liking. I could never find a cover to fit it and I keep in the back yard exposed. The top has rusted and will probably rust through completely in another year or so. It's worked well but I'm ready to move on to something more efficient and smaller.

I'm considering this. Have heard electric is difficult to get the smoke ring, due to low range of temps. I don't know enough to know otherwise.

I, too want simplicity of operation.

You're not going to get a smoke ring on the electric smoker but it has nothing to do with the temperature. I realize smoke ring is important to some but it's really just a visual aspect that doesn't enhance the flavor in any way. With that said, I want a smoke ring sometimes myself and in that case I just use my Weber Kettle and the snake method.

I'll have to lay eyes on it. Am buying a house that has a detached garage. There is a door on the side that has a nice area to grill in right next to it. I have a Weber lp grill and plan to keep it in the garage and take it out when I use it. I plan to do the same with the smoker. I need to be able to move it about 10 feet, though.

So, I guess another criteria is that it needs to have wheels, or be light/sturdy enough for me to pick it up and move it from inside my garage to outside.

I give no f$&ks about having a pretty smoke ring. I just want something convenient that tastes good.

I can smoke an outstanding Boston butt on my weber kettle, but I have to babysit it all day, so I rarely make it. If I could smoke like I cook with my crockpot (set it and forget it), I would do it probably once a month at least.

I have this one and use it all the time. It’s a bit more but it’s quite a few years old and still is just like new.

You may also want to check out the thread on here recently about the Oklahoma Joe Bronco drum smoker.

was coming to post this. excellent smoker and once i got the temp set i left it alone for 10+ hours and temp remained consistent.

if you pick up one on clearance at walmart nothing comes close at this price.

price has dropped to $100 at some stores in my area but those are sold out. you can still get it for $150.

brickseek walmart inventory checker

you do have to load it up with charcoal so its not as 'simple' as propane but it turns out some tasty moist bbq

Skin isn’t rubbery ?

I bought one for like $50, think it was one of those outdoor board threads that make me impulse buy things, but haven’t been to satisfied with chicken on it. I own a Weber kettle and a WSM just figured this would make things easier for smaller smokes. So far not too happy.

honestly i dont like bbq chicken for this reason. no matter what i do the skin turns out greasy. i'd much rather scorch it in the oven and have crispy skin.

I definitely don't get crispy skin at that temp but it's not rubbery either. The key is to get the skin as dry as possible before going in the smoker.

Could always finish it in the oven if you want it to crisp up.
