It was as dead as Elvis when I went.

Seems like the bar is what keeps them open.

I think everyone here is refering to two differant places..

Lafonda's in BR and in Laf. which are in no way connected.

Fro, go check this place out (the BR one) and give us all an un-biased review. You know your Mexican food and I for one would like to know how you stack it up against your favs..................

As I said before, Beef Enchiladas are very good IMO and anything with Ground Beef you should try, just because of the uniqueness of how they do it. The Cheesecake Dessert is good as well.

I think you guys are just trading on nostalgia. Hell, my old man used to take me there when I was a kid. He was a fan of their margaritas.

TigerSpy: Are you me? Same exact story. My dad would take my brother and I there when we were little kids in the 80s. He loved the frozen margaritas. I've been there twice in the last two years and both times the food was really unpalatable.

I still like that they serve bean dip and salsa with their chips.

ETA: Talking about Baton Rouge.

I always heard there was originally some sort of tennuous connection between the two. The original owners of each were somehow related? Is this incorrect?

that may be so, I am not sure.
I was always told they were not releated. Ad they do seem to be completely differant type of places.

true, they have no relation. The Baton Rouge one was first and I believe there was originally a conflict between the two restaurants when the Lafayette one opened with the same name.

And fro, if you go, you can't go wrong with quesedillas, beef enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, and the meat nachos are great. For dessert try the chimicheese cake.

When I was a kid in the early 70's, my folks used to take us to the one in Lafayette (we lived about a block from it). My fav was always the carne asada - it was fantastic!
