I'm looking to get one but I hear a lot of people say that you don't get a true smoke ring in the meat. They describe it as a glorified oven...is this true?

If you are dead set on getting a smoke ring simply add a briquette or 2 of charcoal to the wood chip tray and like magic the smoke ring will appear

Meat drippings will kill the element. I went with propane.

That's the one I've got.

I'm a little disappointed in the longevity.
I got a few months of good smokes on it, now I'm buying the cold smoke accessory.

Some of the reviews on the cold smoke addition are pissing me off. Masterbuilt can go frick themselves.

What reviews have you been reading? I've had mine for over a year and have loved every minutes of it.

This thing is a nice addition to an electric smoker. Allows for easy cold smoke.

First thing I'm gonna take a run at with the cold smoker is a salmon slab.

$12-15, and worst case scenario is I make some kind of dip out of it if it's dry.

Looking at getting one. Sounds like a lot of people went the 40" masterbuilt route.

Got up to about 300 to throw around including accessories.

Is the cold smoke kit necessary because the wood chip tray that comes standard in the smoker is too small?

The box in the smoker won't stay lit after a while. It's gonna happen. Just a matter of time.

I haven't cold smoked anything yet. I use it for the much higher volume of wood chips instead of the tiny tray that comes with it. I like the set and forget part. Now, sometimes the chips get hung up in the column but all you have to do is tap it a bit and the chips will start falling . We are going to try to cold smoke some cheese when it gets colder just to see how it works. Also, I plan to start smoking my own jalapenos and peppers. I got a new meat grinder and a vac sealer for Christmas so we are about to start making our own sausage to smoke as well.

Thought I'd share a pic of my birds. I can't recommend the Masterbuilt enough. I learned how to smoke on a charcoal grill, but this is just too easy

If u want to really cook good bbq , go to a-maze-n products. Get their smoke tube well worth it.

Have you had to replace any parts on it yet? My chip loader tube handle stripped out and I contacted them about where to get a new one. They were real cool and sent me a replacement at no cost. This past weekend I was smoking a Boston butt and the heating element went out. It's only going to be about $20 to replace it but it's the second part that has gone out and had to be replaced and I've only had it for ~2 years and used it probably 20-25 times. Not 100% sure I'm satisfied with the quality of their smoker just yet...
