best beer in the world has to be divided by style, imho

absolutely

no way that a simple brown ale will ever be rated as high as a DIPA or Russian Imperial Stout or Quad, and their ratings suffer because of that.

I use these beer ratings as a loose guideline if I'm deciding on something to buy, but by no means base any of my opinions from it

Ratings/ Rankings of anything like food, restaurants, music, art, women and beer are so subjective as to not be anything more than a rudimentary guide as to what to try/see/do. I think sites like beeradvocate are subject to "bandwagon ratings" where people say something is good because other people say its good. I recently have tried Ballast Point Sculpin IPA which was ranked the #1 IPA on beeradvocate. Sculpin is a decent IPA but not even in my top 20 IPAs.

I'd agree with that... Had it at the Toranado in SD so I know it was fresh.

WOAH! Can I hear your top 20?

That is without a doubt one of the best IPAs around imo. But to each his own. I am intrigued to see what you rate higher and what you look for in a quality IPA.

I have 5 or 6 IPAs listed in the other beer thread. But..... Racer 5 are Brooklyn East India up there for me. An Austin beer, Thirsty Planet Buckethead IPA is greatness.

I guess my problem with the "best beers" is how bitter they taste. Most are IPA's or stout's which are very bitter and bitter is not a flavor I care for. I like a little sweetness. I guess that's why I'm a fan of Belgian style ales (Chimay Blue ftw). Also, I've never had a bad German beer that was actually brewed in Germany.
