I rarely shop there, mostly gas amd few things like below I went and got for the wife and kiddo.
Seems like the nuts and snacks are cheaper, baked good, some frozen stuff. Only thing I found more expensive is some of the meats.
Reason I went:

Not sure but the quality of products offered seem better at Costco.

I find the clothing, I don't buy any at either, is better at Costco, but the rest is pretty even. Costco is further than Sam's for us so we just dropped Costco. I didn't find much difference in quality w/ the food / alcohol or prices w/ either.

Costco is slightly less trashy and the employees and customer service are far superior

Sams = Wal-Mart
Costco = Target
Costco = Target

I think they are pretty darn even, some things slightly more or less at each store but in the end it's a wash. One thing I found confusing when I first got memberships at both is that they will have different sizes or amounts of the same item. It makes comparing the prices a little more difficult.
Now that we no longer live on the south shore I don't really shop at Costco anymore other than occasional things online. I have been happy overall with the quality of member's mark stuff (tp, paper towels, etc)

I agree with the comment about Costco's clothing being superior. I am a member at both and each have their strengths and weaknesses. Meat and produce at Costco appear to be better than Sam's. I find Sam's will have several different brand options on items, where Costco will only have one. I do like that Sam's has an app and you can scan your own goods and by pass the checkout line. Costco's staff is way friendlier and helpful. I find that right when I find something I really like at Costco they do away with it.

I routinely shop both, and they each have some unbeatable prices on specific items.
--Costco's whole milk is usually anywhere from 50 cents to $1.50 cheaper than any other retail milk in NO area. Sam's offers it at the same price as Walmart.
--Sam's bulk Member's Mark nuts are price per ounce competitive with bulk bakery supply 25-lb boxes, but Costco has crazy cheap Cali almonds from time to time. Like 22 cents/oz, when everywhere else is 30 cents or more
--Costco has better cheeses, in terms of quality & selection
--Sam's sells Cool Brew at a few pennies/unit over wholesale prices
Costco sells decent clothes, towels, sheets, etc. Sam's sells junky clothes & linens.

Costco limits the amount of product choices a customer can choose from --- thus reducing confusion on the consumer's part --- as they do a very good job of sourcing their products. For many different product categories, there's usually a choice of one or two brands to pick from.
Sam's, on the other hand, provides the consumer with many different product brand choices, which can be good, if that's what you're looking for or bad, if you can't make a decision.
I am a member of both. Costco's stores are cleaner and their employees are more knowledgeable and helpful. I like Sam's laundry detergent better than Costco's -- and their rotisserie chickens, but like Costco's toilet paper better than Sam's.

Clark Howard had a good explanation of the difference between Sam's Club, Costco, and BJ's. To summarize:
Costco - highest quality and biggest markdown. Best quality store house brand items. Fewest choices.
Sam's - Lesser quality leading to lower prices, overall.
BJ's - highest prices, but offered multiple brand options on products when Costco or Sam's offered only one.
