Is putting a sunny side egg on top a cop out?

I watch “Beat Bobby Flay” and other cooking shows all the time. Many times they will put the sunny side egg on top to add a little richness, creaminess, etc.
I feel like this is kind of a cop out because if the dish is good, it wouldn’t need it. It should stand on its own.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good egg on top of many of the things I eat. There’s nothing wrong with that, but many of these shows they say, “I doing something different, I’m adding an egg on top.” It’s not different and is just telling me your dish is lacking in something.

You could make this argument for literally any ingredient.

Not true. You are talking about an ingredient incorporated into the dish vs an egg added to the top at the last 10 secs

You can look at it that way. Or you can understand that the fried egg is an ingredient as well.

If it’s an ingredient of the dish, everyone would do it, but they ALWAYS say “I’m doing something different.” and the other contestant doesn’t add the egg.
On the last episode, a guy added a sunny side up egg to a Mexican pork & pasta dish. He even used the words “I’m doing something different!”
The judges called him out on it, couldn’t figure out why he did that.
He lost.

One could argue that the egg is part of the dish and therefore it IS standing on its own.

Well damn I should have read the replies.

Do you feel the same way about putting crabmeat on the top a steak? Or anything else? What about etouffee over fried fish? Does that mean the fish lacks something?

Exactly. He’s not making any sense with this.

You can literally say this for ANYTHING added to a dish. You eat your gumbo with rice? Why do you need rice, gumbo should stand alone. Add cheese to a turkey sandwich? Why? Turkey should stand alone.

Well I’d put a soft boiled runny yolk egg on top which is different and half of the people can’t make a proper one anyway.

Or a soft scrambled. That would blow the queer eye for the straight guys mind. And most people can’t make a soft scrambled as well.

Disagree

Gumbo should stand alone. Rice is just there to stretch the dish. It doesn't enhance it.
