for veggie dips ( or anything else), is it better? Or should I just stick with mayo like the recipe says? If its better, does it matter which brand one uses?

Hell yes.

Use that or sour cream in lieu of that vile condiment called mayo.

Half of each can be fantastic in some recipes.

Rat poison is better than mayo most of the time.

Only thing I've really tried is subbing out about half of the mayo in chicken salad for Greek yogurt. It comes out great.

At this point in my life, I am composed of 65% Greek yogurt, between smoothies, yogurt parfaits, labnah, raita, and every other culinary use. So, yes, I use it for veggie or chip dips. Few people notice a difference at parties; those that do often compliment the dip. It is thick. If you use full-fat GY, it has a nice, creamy texture.

Mostly, though, I use 2% or 0%. The flavorings added to the dip add negligible calories, so you can suck down a cup or more of dip and it's all of 150-200 calories. So the occasional dip binge is not a nutritional disaster.

Penzey's spices sells several dip and dressing mixes that make excellent dips when combined w/greek yogurt. A spoon or two of the powdered seasoning blend, moistened with a little water; let it stand for a couple minutes, then stir into GY. Voila, high protein, reduced calorie dip.

Penzey's spices here: LINK Click on the "salads" link on the left. I like the Green Goddess, the "chip n dip", and the country french vinaigrette best. I need to try the buttermilk ranch, though.

I rarely use mayo anymore since starting to sub Greek yogurt for it a few years ago. I think it's better, but I've never been a big mayo fan.

I mostly use Chobani Whole Milk Greek Yogurt. Sometimes I'll go with a different brand if it's on sale at the store.

Fage is my favorite.
#2 is Cabot (farmer owned co-op)
Siggi's is tasty, too, but hard to find in the larger containers.

It depends on the dip. I personally love greek yogurt, but my husband hates it.

1 cup mayonnaise
½ cup sour cream
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 tablespoon dried chives
1 teaspoon dried tarragon
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon paprika (or smoked paprika)
¼ teaspoon onion (dried minced)
to taste salt and pepper

this guy does. Made this with 1/2 cup of mayo and it was pretty good.

But I never made anything with greek yogurt so...

this beat the shite out of blue cheese, ranch, or anything I've found in the store.

I thought he was strictly talking about Mayo only. I was picturing someone with a container of mayo and dipping carrot sticks into it. Mayo-based dressings and sauces are completely different.

I just used whole milk GY as a dessert. I scooped out a big quenelle of GY and drizzled with Pomegranate molasses and dusted with Cardamom and topped with fresh Pomegranate seeds. Awesome dessert regardless of calories.

Oh, I also put some fig preserves drizzed on it.
