I make them from time to time. I have a box of each in the cupboard as well as a couple boxes of their jambalaya mix. I made red beans and rice from scratch last week and will probably do the same with jambalaya over the weekend. I'm not sure when I'll use the box mixes but they're nice to have around in a pinch.

I saw Zatarain's andouille sausage in the store for the first time the other day. I got some. It's not very authentic based on my limited experience but it's spicy sausage and it tastes like Zatarain's spices. I'll probably try it with black beans and rice.

If Im trying to be lazy with red beans i just do new orleans style blue runners

A blind person couldn’t tell a difference With cheater red beans with no salt blue runners, sautée half a canister of Guidrys trinity, some fresh chopped garlic and parsley, throw in some good assuage, season it .. hours less same taste, friends will think you’re a rockstar and not know

To answer the original post, yes...yes it is blasphemous.

It can be an okay midweek cheat, but it’s not even in the same league as the real stuff.

OP I’ve never tried it. Didn’t know they made that one to be honest.

I got one that’s awesome from Zatarains recently. Buy their dirty rice box, I bought the family size one, and use sage sausage. The kind of sausage you would use for breakfast patties. There is something in that sage sausage that makes that stuff taste amazing. I even stuffed some in pita bread and it tasted very similar to a Natchitoches Meat Pie.

I do think it’s a sin to put Conecuh Sausage in gumbo. Don’t get me wrong I live in Daphne, AL and love that finger sized skinny Conecuh sausage on the grill, but not in a gumbo. It’s too greasy for that and the texture is odd. I think it has something to do with that sheepskin casing. I thought I saw where you said you liked it in the black beans. I’d have to try it.

To make this mess, you cook both the red beans and the rice in the same pot. I guess the beans are pre-cooked, then freeze dried for the mix.

I don't think that poster is from here...Those mix's are just ok at best.

Some of y'all are missing the point. You take a box mix and add some smoked sausage to it and in 20 minutes voila!

Just this week I happened upon about a pound of Kartchners smoked sausage in my freezer and ate it with a box of Tony's RB&R. Lot of flavor for 20 minutes.

Conecuh has too much msg. Nasty. You want some real sausage get some Cajun Hot from Farm Fresh Meats in Robertsdale. Best hot sausage you will ever eat and it is killer in jambalaya, red beans and gumbo.
