My wife absolutely loves Olive Garden. We go there when she picks where we go eat. We don't count it as a "big going out" night though.

The food is good and quick. There aren't many other Italian restaurants in the South Baton Rouge/Ascension area that I know of. DeAngelo's isn't that good, we go to Bravo occasionally and Little Village sometimes too, but she really jsut loves Olive Garden.

I've never seen anything like the hold Olive Garden has on the female population. Seriously, I have to wonder if they aren't doing jedi mind tricks on them in their commercials.

They all want to be cool and go out on dinner dates with their friends and order the never-ending pasta bowl.

I don't have a problemw ith a chain if it's all you got, or don't have time to explore, etc.

I go to Waffle House when I am hungover and want a hangover meal. But I know what I am getting.

I know several groups of girls that do the chick dinner dates, and they go to good restaurants.

So do I... it was obviously a generalization.

I've eaten at four chains in the last week or so... I suck!

Took a few days, but good to see that controversy is alive and well on The F&DB

And no, Spoonie Luv is not an alter of mine...

In 7 days.

Last Wednesday I was invited to go to Hooter's for trivia, and I did.
Saturday morning I hit the road early and grabbed some McD's breakfast for the drive.
Saturday lunch I went to Chipotle because I'd never been and there was one right by the gf's place.
Yesterday I had some Subway for dinner because I was running late to record a radio show and needed something quick.

I think that's all.

Nothing really wrong with that at all.

I guess I was just in a mood and venting because I saw another, "Can't wait for date night with my man at OLIVE GARDEN!!!" status update.

I eat local way more than I eat chains on average. And I cook even more often than I eat out.

Sometimes you'd have to really go out of your way, or be anti-social, to not eat a meal or two at a chain restaurant. It's not usually worth that to me.

Unless some friends invited me to Olive Garden... then I'd politely decline.

and chain is such a broad definition .. i like to hang out at the bar at BJ's Brewhouse with friends and chew the fat with everyday joes about whatever ballgames are on the TV .. that's a chain .. i can't do that at the bar at Stroube's .. so it would be silly to completely discount patronizing chains for even people with the means but not the interest in eating at better places ..

I have no problems going to Plucker's to watch some games, and that's a chain as well.

Damn, is it alright to feel sorry for people that get super excited about any food.

Balls has his food on short term lease.

On the OT? Sure... On a FOOD board? No, it's not alright.

really not what this thread is about.

national chains can be quite different from regional chains.

for me, it's all about where the food being served comes from. I make a point to avoid restaurants where they offer meat and/or other expensive items that have ever been frozen.

At the end of the day it's still just food

I wouldn't say I really get "excited" about food unless I'm looking forward to a meal at a really nice place. I enjoy eating things I like but to say I get excited about it might be a little bit of an exaggeration.

Chains have their place.

Not every city is a food mecca of locally owned reasonably priced restaurants putting out quality food. Not everyone cooks instead of going to a chain. Not everyone is into food as much as the folks on this board are. (That's why these threads never go well. People on this board are here to talk about food and, for the most part, not chains or fast food, though there are plenty here who get excited when Cane's isn't open.) It's not their hobby nor is it at the top of their list of important things in life. I don't have sympathy for them because that's a choice.

I have sympathy for hard working folks with families or people whose situation doesn't allow for them to eat where they might prefer.

I don't look down on folks if they eat at chains or get excited over a meal at one of them. If they enjoy that, it's fine. I don't, but that's my choice. I've only been to an Olive Garden once. It wasn't bad food. It's pasta for crying out loud. I simply prefer other places.

I have to eat at an Outback, periodically, because people I know and love happen to like the place. The salads are good and the pork tenderloin with steamed fresh veggies is fine. Nothing wrong with the food. I've had much better and could get something I like more for the money, but what the heck.

I love a good greasy breakfast at Waffle House with extra crispy hash browns and ketchup. Sometimes, there's nothing better at the time. Haven't been in years, but I wouldn't think twice about going if the opportunity or urge presented itself.

I'm sure you could on the internet. I highly doubt you will wade up in an Olive garden and inform the masses that they are all stupid and beneath you.

I was telling VT and Michigan fans in line at Oceana they were stupid for eating there.

I would do it. People who eat at Olive Garden are idiots. (not against all chains, but every city has great cheap Italian, this place is a farce. Buy a bag of Michelina's and a DiGorno and you would have better Italian)

Where would I find such a place in Kenner? I'm not sure it actually exists.

you could make this case for the majority of steak houses too .. in most cases you can buy your own cuts of meat and grill them at home every bit as good as most of them do ..

Right, but dining out is also meant to be a social experience.
