To the guys talking about how bad it is...how was it cooked when you tried it?

It certainly is oily and has a strong fish flavor, but I don't mind it. As said before, remove the red meat. I've had it grilled and it was good. Just about everything tastes good fried so that's an option. Cedar planking it might work, but I've never gone that route. Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

I have had it fried, grilled, baked, and smoked. It was edible each time, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it.
There's too many other good options IMO.

some of my friends went on a cheap charter out of biloxi and that's what they came back with
I tried a couple things since i didn't want to hurt their feeling by throwing it away

They make excellent boullettes.
If you can cook, you can make almost any fish worthy to serve as a meal.
some people have limited abilities and only deal with the easy stuff.

Me and some friends ate it once after fishing all day and catching nothing but spanish mackerals. That night after drinking all day it wasn't bad fried. Tried it the next day and it was just plain bad. Alcohol obviously affected our taste buds.
Tried it a few more times cooked different ways and never liked it no matter how it was cooked.

We are talking about tastes so I'm not going to argue with anyone, but I find fried fresh Spanish Mackerel to be good table fare. Again, Kings are a different story.

My old man loves to smoke them.
This is your best option. Then flake the smoked mackerel and make a pate or dip with softened cream cheese, mayo or sour cream, lemon juice & horseradish.

smoke them
I lived in Ft. Lauderdale for a few years and growing up in LA we would throw them back or make crab bait. We would drift for them in FL early in the mornings and always catch a few Kings. I was skeptical, but after being smoked and made into fish dip...really good. The only way I will ever eat mackerel.
