People also need to understand they are paying for rarity as much, or more, than they are quality. Now, the highest quality food and drink are usually expensive, but just because they are expensive doesn't mean they are quality. That bottle of wine you're holding might be swill, but if it's swill from a vineyard that only produces a few cases a year, it's going to be expensive swill.

But you’re right. I read an article recently about whiskey blind tastings and many “top” brands came in low on peoples voting.

When my nephew was 17, I was going into a convenience store for a coke, I asked what he wanted to drink. He said "Get me an Ozarka water. No, wait... make that a Dasani." I said increduously there was no difference in taste. He insisted there was. So, I bought 5 different water bottle brands to do a blind taste test. The only one I got right was the metallic tasting tap water entry. My nephew named all 6 entries correctly!
Flash-forward prior to the pandemic restaurant shutown, my nephew was now the wine sommelier at Emeril's in nola. Emeril took my nephew to NYC to enter him in a sommelier wine/entree-pairing competition. My nephew won the NYC competition two years in a row! He's got some talented taste buds.
TL;DR while there a plenty of phony foodie snobs out there, I found out there really are people that exist with superior discerning taste buds.

I'm kind of the same way. Usually when we go to a nice restaurant it's just because I want to take my wife somewhere nice. I've never really been blown away by food in my life.
I like a good steak a few times per year but I think I can cook a good one at home too.

Same. My excitement level for eating out is not really changed depending on restaurant.
But I do most of my own shopping and cooking too. Making a good meal with good ingredients isn't difficult.

It depends. I like smooth bourbons so I can tell the difference between Angels Envy & Jack
