We don't have a Popeye's here so is this an okay substitute?

Good, not great. I’d put it more towards a Wendy’s spicy chicken. Not even close to Popeye’s.

Nothing is a substitute for Popeyes.

It’s a bit dry. The fish sandwich is better than the chicken at whataburger.

I didn't really care for it. I'd rank it below Popeye's, Chick Fil A and Wendy's.

While Whataburger is probably my favorite fast-food burger, I've always found their fried chicken (tenders, buffalo chicken sandwich & that sandwich) to be subpar.

I do like their grilled chicken Monterey melt and find their chicken tacos to be highly underrated fast food options.

Looks dry from that pic. Can't imagine it's as bad as McDonald's effort at unseating Popeye's. That thing was closer to a Walmart sandwich competitor.

It was decent. I would definitely stick to the patty melt or burger next time though.

Everything fried at Whataburger sucks. Their burgers rock, but their fries, tenders, and everything else fried is crap.

I’d gladly trade you EVERY Popeyes we have in New Orleans for ONE Whataburger.

I still think the Popeyes sandwich would be better if the spicy one was the same as the rest of their spicy chicken instead of just the mild chicken with some spicy Mayo.

The Whataburger commercial says their new sandwich gets its spiciness by marinating the pieces before frying. Isn't that the way Popeyes does its regular spicy chicken?

Yes. When you order a mixed piece spicy box from Popeyes, you see red pepper under the skin, inside the chicken. However, for their spicy chicken sandwich there's no visible red pepper inside the breast. That is a tad disappointing; however, it's still quite delicious overall. The frying batter is perfection.

As for the Whataburger spicy chicken sandwich, yes seasoning on the inside, but as another poster above properly pointed out, it seems Whataburger does a poor job with its fried offerings.

The wife (no pics) and I had the Whataburger Spicy Chicken Sandwich for lunch today. Certainly not on par with Popeye's, but overall, not bad. Since we don't have a Popeye's here, we'll probably get the Whataburger from time to time.
