That's what you thought. I have it and it works great. I gave plenty of space for it.
Rice cooker. I'm a fan.
Mine came with a steaming tray that goes right below the lid to steam vegetables while the rice is cooking.
Multitasker.

I keep food items on my countertops because of limited space.. I certainly don't have room for random gadgets like rice cookers.
why would you keep it on the countertop?

Rice Cooker > Random Gadgets
Beside, I prefer the extra burner on the stove to a little extra counter space.

Boil it for 18 minutes in water with a little olive oil and salt, drain in a colander when the timer goes off.

I keep FOOD on my countertop because I am so lacking in cabinet space. There's definitely not room for a cooker in the cabinets.

I think you overestimate the cabinet space that a 24 year old single lady living alone has

For me, it is equivalent to a panini press or something... a gadget that makes something I can make in a regular pot/pan/etc.
My rice on the stove takes little to no effort and always turns out just fine
So for me, buying something that can only make one item that I already have a means to make is a random gadget.
Only benefit to rice cooker for me personally would be cooking mass amounts of rice that I need to keep warm.. which is never.

Understood that. I just didn't get random.
Some families cook rice every day. My mother cooked it twice on many days. No comparison to a panini press. I suppose those days are gone though.

Ah. I see what you meant now
If rice is a daily (or almost daily) item you leave out, makes sense to have the cooker.

Rice Cooker
Before that is was the ole Knuckle meathod[/quote]
I use a rice cooker AND the ole knuckle method. I never measure anything. Drives my wife insane. Watched too much Justin Wilson as a child.

Mahatma, 2:1 ratio. I put Tbsb of butter in the pan on medium heat, then add 2 cups of water and crank it to high. Get it boiling, add a cup of rice, stir it, reduce to low and cover and after about 15 minutes turn that burner off. I have a ceramic cooktop, so it will stay warm for a little while even after it is off. I eat the rice whenever everything else is done. Never had an issue with it taking up space, because if I'm cooking enough to fill up all the burners I'm probably not having rice or I'm using the oven or grill as well.

anyone ever try cooking rice in a pressure cooker? quick search on google shows it apparently works.

My rice cooker cooks under steam pressure. I use jasmine rice and wash it first until the water runs clear. Uses a little less water than rice. I just eyeball it and add water until its just below the rice surface. The cooker has multiple settings but I always use the normal setting (45 min). It switches to warm when done.
Always comes out just right.

You can say that again.
When I bring my lunch to work, coworkers ask "what you having with rice today?"

I put however many scoops of rice I want to eat into a bowl with the numbers 1-4 stamped in the side. I fill the bowl with water until the water is at the number of scoops I put in the bowl. I put the bowl in the rice cooker. I push the 'white rice' button and skillfully wait patiently until it beeps.

me too.
they are pretty cheap, and you don't have to deal with shite.
Clears up space not the stove if you are cooking other things.
No brainer IMO
